Ancient History: What for? The Possibilities between Teaching and Entertainment through Digital Games
(2021-08-04) Carvalho Rossi, Andrea Lúcia Dorini de Oliveira [UNESP]; Bondioli, Nelson de Paiva [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
There are several visions and proposals concerning the ways – and the content – to approach teaching History in schools, although it is possible to assert that there is one important consensus among the specialists: Teaching History is much more than simply teach ‘dates’ and ‘events’ expecting students to memorize them, but rather it is about working towards the development of the critical-analytical tools of the students, as well as other different transferable skills and abilities, useful in different situations of quotidian life. Based on this understanding, it is possible to see how History and its processes of learning open themselves to a myriad of possibilities and tools, especially those made available by the advances and the development of digital technologies, increasingly ubiquitous. In this sense, the present article aims at, specifically, discussing the possibilities of teaching Ancient History through digital games. Bearing that in mind, two discussions are presented concerning, first, the theoretical discussions on historical literacy – and the concepts of historicity, temporality and historical conscience – and second, the role of the entertainment industry in relation to these discussions. Concerning this last element, it will be sought to present a commentary on the articulation of the possibilities of working towards a historical education, starting from an analysis of textual and graphical narratives of games, such as Assassin's Creed Origins, developed by Ubisoft.

Dynamic analysis of an electromagnetic vibration absorber in a non-ideal system
(2023-01-01) Petrocino, Eduardo Abuhamad [UNESP]; Balthazar, José Manoel [UNESP]; Tusset, Ângelo Marcelo; Gonçalves, Paulo José Paupitz [UNESP]; Silveira, Marcos [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP); Federal University of Technology – Paraná
A dynamic system usually used in engineering are rotating machines fixed to flexible structures, and an excessive vibration known as the Sommerfeld effect may occur in the passage of the resonance. This research aims to analyze an electromagnetic absorber in a non-ideal system, a simple model for the analysis of the first mode of a beam. In this context, an investigation of the dynamic behavior of a cantilever beam with a dc motor coupled to its free end, having an unbalanced mass on its axis, providing a non-ideal energy source. A permanent magnet is attached to this same free end, which is immersed inside a coil attached to the base. In this step, an analysis of the dynamic behavior is carried out by means of an analytical solution approximated by the averaging method and by numerical computational simulations. The absorber reduces the phenomena caused by the Sommerfeld effect and reduces the region of instability.

Analysis of the dynamic characteristics of rod and beam structures with nonlinear stiffness boundaries
(2022-07-01) Xu, Wenfeng; Tang, Bin; Brennan, Michael J. [UNESP]; Manconi, Elisabetta; Gonçalves, Paulo J. Paupitz [UNESP]; Dalian University of Technology; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP); University of Parma
Nonlinear boundaries exist in many engineering structures and significantly influence the vibration of systems. The dynamic characteristics of a rod or beam structure with nonlinear stiffness boundaries were studied. The traveling wave method and the variable separation method were used to analyze the dynamic characteristics of the rod, and the relationship between the two approaches was investigated. For the beam, the incident propagating and nearfield waves were considered, respectively. The relationships between the dimensionless frequency, displacement, reflection coefficient, and phase were discussed by using the harmonic balance method. Finally, the backbone and frequency response curves of the rod and beam structures were obtained by using the phase closure principle and the variable separation method. In order to verify the accuracy and effectiveness of the theoretical calculations, a finite element numerical simulation was carried out for the rod and beam models. The results show that the theoretical solutions compare well with the numerical simulation results.

On the Formation of a Super Attenuation Band in a Mono-coupled Finite Periodic Structure Comprising Asymmetric Cells
(2023-01-01) Germanos Cleante, Vinicius [UNESP]; Brennan, Michael John [UNESP]; Paupitz Gonçalves, Paulo José [UNESP]; Carneiro, Jean Paulo [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
Metamaterials are employed to reduce vibration levels by exploiting the effects of structural periodicity. When structural elements are arranged in a periodic pattern, they act as mechanical filters, creating stop-bands. The term stop-band is often used for infinite structures, but a more appropriate term for a finite structure is attenuation band. A way of obtaining this effect is by attaching vibration absorbers, which create a local resonance stop-band plus a Bragg stop-band. The local resonance stop-band is controlled only by the properties of the attached device. The Bragg stop-band depends on the interaction between the host cell and the device. The combination of these two effects can create an attenuation zone – the so-called super attenuation band. Recent works on finite mono-coupled metamaterials have shown that asymmetric periodic structures have better attenuation properties when compared to the symmetric ones, if they are correctly orientated. This paper investigates the formation of a super attenuation band in a finite mono-coupled structure using vibration absorbers. The system is defined by the formation of a cell, which repeats along with the whole structure. The cell can be divided into sub-cells with equal or different dynamic properties. The dynamic features to form the super attenuation band are determined from the displacement transmissibility of a single cell. This analysis is extended to several cells. The results show that a super attenuation band can only occur when each attached vibration absorber is optimally tuned to its corresponding host cell in a structure comprising cells with dynamical asymmetry.

A passive self-tuning vibration neutraliser using nonlinear coupling between the degrees of freedom
(2023-02-15) Nehemy, Gabriella Furlan [UNESP]; Rustighi, Emiliano; Gonçalves, Paulo J. Paupitz [UNESP]; Brennan, Michael J. [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP); University of Trento
Vibration neutralisers are widely used to suppress vibration of a host structure subject to external excitation at a specific frequency. When attached to a structure, they create a notch filter in the frequency response, reducing the vibration levels considerably. An inherent limitation is related to the narrow frequency range in which they are effective. Over the years, there have been different attempts to make the vibration absorber more robust. These include using active and semi-active control strategies to change the tuning frequency, using piezoelectric elements with shunt circuits, electromagnetic actuators, servo motors, and even exploring nonlinear effects. In many cases, there is a need for an external power source to modify the characteristics of the system. This paper concerns a passive vibration neutraliser that can adapt automatically to one of two frequencies corresponding to the frequency of an external harmonic force. Importantly, it does this without the need for an external power source. The device consists of a beam-like neutraliser that is attached to the host structure at its centre through a roller bearing. The stiffness element is a rectangular beam that can rotate in the bearing, changing the stiffness it presents to the direction of excitation. The paper describes an experimental study into such a device, and an analytical model is proposed that qualitatively captures the time-domain behaviour of the experimental device. A possible mechanism by which the device self-tunes to either of the two frequencies of excitation is discussed. Supplementary material is also provided to show the device in operation.

A Rebel Syllable in the Heart of the Empire: Political and Gender Tensions in Domitian’s Principate
(2019-07-16) Ribeiro Junior, Benedito Inácio [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP); Faculdade de Administração de Santa Cruz do Rio Pardo
The aim of this article is to highlight the political and gender tensions during Domitian’s principate (81-96 AD) through the representations of the eunuch Earinus created in poems by Statius and Martial. More specifically, we sought, based on gender and queer studies, to analyse this emblematic figure that helped the construction of images of the measures taken by the Domitian emperor, both in the political and literary fields, as well as in the ambit of gender and sexuality regulations. Hence, it was perceived that the political and gender tensions that surrounded Domitian’s court were intertwined and sought to reinforce gender performances through the representation of a rebellious, not fixed or homogeneous identity.

Methane concentrations and fluxes in agricultural and preserved tropical headwater streams
(2022-10-20) Taniwaki, Ricardo Hideo; Cunha, Davi Gasparini Fernandes; Bento, Camila Bolfarini; Martinelli, Luiz Antonio; Stanley, Emily H.; Filoso, Solange; Ferreira, Murilo de Souza; França, Marcus Vinícius; Ribeiro Júnior, José Wagner [UNESP]; Schiesari, Luis César; do Carmo, Janaína Braga; Federal University of ABC; Universidade de São Paulo (USP); Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar); University of Wisconsin-Madison; University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
Tropical streams have been intensively impacted by agricultural activities. Among the most important agricultural activities in Brazil, sugarcane production represents a large impact for economic development and for environmental conditions. Permeating sugarcane fields, several headwater streams can be affected by sugarcane cultivation, in special, aquatic biogeochemical cycles because of the deforestation, fertilization, crop residues and higher temperatures in the tropics. In this study, we analyzed the effects of sugarcane cultivation on methane fluxes and concentrations, assuming that carbon cycles are influenced by agricultural activities in headwater streams. Our study aimed to (1) measure methane fluxes and concentrations in tropical streams located in Southeastern Brazil, (2) Analyze whether seasonal cycles influence methane fluxes and concentrations, (3) Evaluate the influence of sugarcane cultivation on methane fluxes and (4) Analyze the association between water chemistry in the methane concentrations in tropical streams. We found mean fluxes of CH4 of 0.280 mmol m−2 d−1, with higher fluxes during the summer and in streams draining preserved catchments. The average CH4 concentrations were 0.695 μmol L−1, with higher values during the summer and in streams draining preserved catchments. Methane concentrations in the studied streams was influenced by dissolved oxygen (negatively), dissolved organic carbon (negatively), water velocity (positively) and conductivity (negatively). Methane concentrations were significantly higher than concentrations found in Temperate Grasslands, Savannas & Shrublands and similar to concentrations found in other tropical biomes (excluding Tropical & Subtropical Moist Broadleaf Forests which receives large amounts of organic inputs). We conclude that sugarcane influence methane concentrations and fluxes in tropical streams by reducing the organic matter availability provided by the native vegetation in soil and water.

The collaboration of Maria Amália Vaz de Carvalho with O Paiz (1884-1889): Survey of texts and preliminary research notes
(2022-03-19) De Luca, Tania Regina [UNESP]; Da Silva, Ana Cláudia Suriani; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP); Culture and Society (SELCS)
The project The necessity for discussing the absent: Women chroniclers in the nineteenth century press: Research in collections (UCL, Unesp, Unicamp) aims to systematically locate the collaboration of writers Maria Amália Vaz de Carvalho (1847-1921), Maria Benedita Câmara Bormann (pseudonym Délia, 1853-1895), Emília Moncorvo Bandeira de Melo (pseudonym Carmen Dolores, 1852-1910) and Júlia Lopes de Almeida (1862-1934) in the Rio de Janeiro press during the Belle Époque. The survey is based on the digital collection of periodicals available at the Hemeroteca Digital Brasileira, Brazilian National Library. In addition to organizing free access digital editions, it intends to reassess the female presence in the late nineteenth-century press, in order to give more visibility to women's journalism and construct new narratives around female voices, which are still largely silent. The article focuses on Maria Amália's career until joining O Paiz, and presents her five-year collaboration with this daily newspaper which (although not continuously) amounts to almost one hundred articles. This paper aims to present the general features of this voluminous set of texts from a diverse range of genres - crônicas, short stories, essays and book reviews - and to highlight its multiple possibilities for analysis. It should be noted that this is a work in progress.

Le Messager du Brésil (RJ, 1878-1884): trajectory in three movements
(2022-03-28) De Luca, Tania Regina [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
This article analyzes the trajectory of the newspaper Le Messager du Brésil, written in French and printed in Rio de Janeiro. From the analysis of the available collections emerge three distinct moments that point to the newspaper’s increasing involvement in Brazilian political debates, scenario in which Le Messager was far from a passive observer. The example invites us to review the image normally associated with the press published in foreign language in the literature regarding the Brazilian press, which, more often than not, see them as circumscribed to specific groups, undermining their political action.

Operários chineses em Moçambique. O engajamento de trabalhadores sob contrato no Império português (1857-1859)1
(Associação Nacional de História - ANPUH, 2021-07-02) Gonçalves, Paulo Cesar [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp)
At the end of the 1850s, Lisbon conceived the employment of Chinese workers, emigrants from Macau, in services considered specialized (bricklayers, blacksmiths, carpenters, copper workers and stone chippers), in the province of Mozambique, by the system of indentured labor. Even without consulting any authority in those localities about its convenience, the initiative produced a series of documents, which transited vertically between the metropolis and the colonies. This documentation makes it possible to identify a pioneering movement of indentured labor within the limits of the Portuguese empire, in the wake of the growing flow of this type of labor (especially of Chinese and Indian men) in the Indian and Atlantic worlds. Moreover, the documented dispute between these workers and the Mozambican government over the performance and remuneration of services also makes it possible to identify the agency of the Chinese recruits in defending their contractual rights.

The purpose of this article is to make some notes on the image of Emperor Trajan as an optimus princeps from the literature produced in the Roman Principality. The analyzed works are those produced by Suetonius, Pliny the Younger, Dio of Prusa and Cassius Dio and that allow to identify the construction of images of the two emperors in a dichotomous and antagonistic form like that of Trajan from his predecessor, Domitian. These antagonistic positions are approached, based on these works, through two fundamental elements for a ruler of the Roman Empire: his relationship with the Senate and his leadership before the Army.

Seizures among the Participants of the Inconfidência Mineira as a Source for Research on the History of Books and Libraries (1789)
(Universidade Estadual Paulista Julio de Mesquita Filho, 2018-02-08) Rodrigues, André Figueiredo [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp)
This article discusses the seizure of assets owned by the participants in the Minas Gerais State separatist movement known as the Inconfidência Mineira in Brazil, and whether these seizure records may serve as a source for research on the history of books, libraries, and general reading habits in Minas Gerais in the second half of the eighteenth century. First, the historical context of books and the intersection between the seizures and the region’s literary culture were examined. The possibilities and the limits to the use of these seizure records in the study of private libraries is also analyzed. Finally, some of the conspirators’ reading habits, which were influenced by the revolutionary ideas that circulated Europe and North America, are presented.
