Ocimum basilicum L. belongs to the Lamiaceae family and is an aromatic plant from Asia and North Africa used most in medicine, food and pharmaceutical industry. This research aimed to evaluate the effect of plant growth regulators on biomass production, essential oil yield and composition by Ocimum basilicum L. species, as well as, the time for vegetative material harvest on essential oils tenor. To this effect, the experiments were carried out in a greenhouse in the Botany Department, Bioscience Institute, Sao Paulo State University, UNESP, Botucatu, SP, Brazil. The experimental design was in randomized blocks with four treatments and four replications. The treatments were constituted by the following plant growth regulators: gibberellic acid (GA3), 2-chloroethyl-phosphonic acid (ethephon), kinetin, all of them at 100 mg L-1, and a control without plant growth regulator. The leaf application of the plant growth regulators was accomplished in three times in intervals of 20 days. Two experiments were installed, being the first used to evaluate essential oil yield and composition of shoot and inflorescences, in two harvest times and the second, to evaluate the plants growth parameters. In the first experiment, 90 days after planting, the whole shoot was harvested in two moments, at 10 and 17 ofclock and separated in inflorescences and leaves plus stems. Essential oil extraction was accomplished by hydrodistillation, using a Clevenger machine, for three hours. The essential oil yield was calculated in leaves plus stems and inflorescences (flower bud, flowers in anthesis and fruits). The chemical oil essential composition was accomplished in a gas chromatograph attached to a mass spectrometer. In the second experiment, five harvests were accomplished at 50, 64, 78, 92 and 106 days after planting for the determination of height, leaf area, dry weight of leaf, stem, root and total plants...
