In the year 1964, Brazil suffered a military coup which was mainly instigated by the Army. With the pretext of saving the country from the supposed danger of communism, the military became the main political group with the highest profile in Brazilian politics. Incorporated into the National Security Doctrine, the military government executed a political domination of the state in the name of a military nationalist project. Nevertheless there was opposition which arose in two forms: passive and armed resistance through the student movement, clandestine political parties, guerrilla groups, artist activists etc. In light of this, the armed opposition longed to construct a socialist project for the country, as they judged the actual capitalist model incapable of fulfilling the wishes of the working class, specifically because there were militaries in the command of the state’s politics. So the guerrilla tactics that were used to overthrow the Armed Forces were planned on two main foreign revolutionary theories: Focalism and Maoism. Both concepts are based on rural guerrilla warfare using the strategy of struggle, in other words, civil war against the government would be waged in the countryside. These theories permeated within the imagination of the guerrilla fighters however they acted much more in the city environment, as the participants were mostly and essentially urban individuals. Hence the present work aims to analyze the controversy of conflicting identity arising from the rural revolutionary theory contrasting with the practice of urban guerrilla warfare. Thus, we used, as a source, the criminal process against the Communist Revolutionary Movement (MCR), a guerrilla organization that acted in the City of Porto Alegre, with the help of the Popular Revolutionary Vanguard (VPR); some discourses from the left (such as the Urban Guerrilla Manual by Carlos Marighella) and the right...
