Resumo
A tradução é um processo mental que não está restrito a fatores linguísticos. Vários outros fatores atravessam a tradução e norteiam as escolhas dos tradutores, como aspectos sociais, históricos e culturais. Embora a contribuição dos tradutores e da tradução no conhecimento e no avanço da humanidade seja incontestável, ela ainda não tem o devido reconhecimento, particularmente a tradução técnica e de textos especializados, que por muito tempo esteve à margem das pesquisas acadêmicas dada a crença equivocada de que os textos técnicos envolveriam apenas questões de terminologia. À luz da necessidade de se conhecer melhor o processo tradutório e a figura do tradutor, o presente estudo foi concebido a partir de uma experiência prática relacionada à tradução de uma plataforma educacional on-line voltada à tradução médica e tem como objetivo apresentar aspectos teóricos da tradução a partir da abordagem funcionalista e das condicionantes culturais e discutir o processo tradutório como uma ação na prática, com base na abordagem performativa da linguagem e na abordagem sociológica proposta por Pierre Bourdieu para unir a teoria à prática e refletir sobre as características dos textos especializados e suas relações com aspectos de cultura, língua e sociedade. Para tanto, buscou-se empregar uma metodologia qualitativa narrativa, fazendo uso de exemplos para demonstrar que o tradutor técnico não é um mero reprodutor de sentidos estáticos, mas sim um agente ativo no campo científico, médico e educacional e que seu trabalho, suas escolhas, suas estratégias, reflexões e conhecimentos não podem ser vistos como um processo automático, desprovido de criatividade ou subjetividade, uma vez que sua ação está sempre pautada em seu compromisso com o texto de partida e com o receptor do texto de chegada, nas relações linguísticas, culturais e sociológicas do texto de chegada e no que se espera ou pretende com o texto de chegada, para que este de fato transforme-se em conhecimento e cumpra com a sua finalidade. Dessa forma, nosso estudo possibilitou reflexões que podem contribuir com o avanço da área da tradução, como atividade prática, e também com seu ensino na formação de futuros tradutores e mostrou a importância de incluir a tradução técnica e de textos especializados no rol dos Estudos da Tradução para entender melhor a figura do tradutor, a tradução como ação e seu impacto nas áreas do conhecimento.
Translating is not a mental process restricted to linguistic factors. Several other factors permeate translation and guide the choices of translators, such as social, historical, and cultural aspects. Although the contribution of translation and translators towards knowledge and advance of humanity is unquestionable, it has not gained due recognition, especially, when it comes to technical and specialized translation, which for a long time has been on the fringes of academic research given the misguided belief that technical texts would only involve terminology issues. In the light of the need of learning more about the translation process and the translator’s figure, this study was conceived from a practical experience related to the translation of an online educational platform designed to medical education and it aims to bring the aspects of theoretical translation, from the funcionalist and cultural mark approaches, and to discuss the translation process as as an action in practice, based on the performative approach and on the sociological approach proposed by Pierre Bourdieu to join theory and practice and to ponder on the features of specialized texts and their relationships with aspects of culture, language and society. For this purpose, we adopted a qualitative narrative methodology, using examples, to show that technical translators are not mere reproducers of statistical senses, but they are active agents in the scientific, medical, and educational field, and their work, choices, strategies, reflections, and knowledge cannot be regarded as an automatic process, free of creativity or subjectivity, once their action is always grounded on their commitment to the source text and to the receptor of the target text, on the linguistic, cultural, and sociological relationships of the target text and on what is expected from the target text, so it can indeed turn into knowledge and accomplish its purpose. Thus, our study offered reflections that might contribute to the advance of the field of translation, as a practical activity, and also to the education of translators to be, it showed as well the importance of including technical and specialized translation in the agenda of Translation Studies to understand better the translator’s figure, the translation as an action and its impact on the fields of knowledge.
