Abstract

Abstract (english)

This thesis presents the results of doctoral research conducted in the Graduate Program in Education (PPGE) at the School of Philosophy and Sciences of São Paulo State University (FFC/UNESP), Marília Campus. Its general objective is to analyze elements of the transition from the Degree Program in Pedagogy Teaching to the Degree Program in Primary Education Teaching at the Polytechnic Institute of Queen Njinga a Mbande University, in Malanje, Angola, between 2016 and 2024, within the broader context of the historical transformations of teacher education in Malanje, Angola. The study is based on the hypothesis that the replacement of the Degree Program in Pedagogy Teaching by the Degree Program in Primary Education Teaching was associated with a redefinition of teacher education, possibly strengthening a more technical form of preparation geared toward immediate school practice, to the detriment of theoretical, critical, and educational management dimensions previously encompassed by the Degree Program in Pedagogy Teaching. The main questions guiding the research are as follows: what motivated the change from the Degree Program in Pedagogy Teaching to the Degree Program in Primary Education Teaching? Which educational, institutional, social, and political elements led to this decision? In which curricular, structural, and administrative aspects did the implementation take place? What effects can be observed in students’ education, in graduates’ pedagogical practice, and in the perceptions of the participants involved? This doctoral research follows the author’s master’s research (Manuel, 2021), which examined the initial Education Sciences programs in Malanje, focusing on the first degree programs, especially the Degree Program in Pedagogy Teaching and the Degree Program in Mathematics Teaching, and highlighting the conditions surrounding the creation and consolidation of the Malanje Polytechnic Higher School. This thesis is based on historical research in terms of approach and documentary research in terms of sources, developed from a “New Cultural Redistribution” (De Certeau, 1979), understood as the identification, gathering, selection, and systematization of documentary material composing the research corpus, constituted in light of the specific characteristics of the institution under study and the researcher’s “institutional place.” Accordingly, the study drew on sources produced both inside and outside the institution, including official documents, pedagogical projects, decrees, institutional records, and interviews with graduates of teacher education programs—namely, the Degree Program in Pedagogy Teaching and the Degree Program in Primary Education Teaching—as well as former managers. Among other findings, the analyses made it possible to recognize the importance of the creation of Queen Njinga a Mbande University in consolidating Malanje as a reference academic hub, since it came to have its own university. At the same time, the decision to discontinue a program with a historical trajectory in Angola and formative relevance for teacher education weakened institutional memory and interrupted an academic tradition that had been contributing to the consolidation of teacher education identity in Malanje, Angola. The findings also allow us to infer that the replacement of the Degree Program in Pedagogy Teaching by the Degree Program in Primary Education Teaching, although justified by the need to respond to the immediate demands of the educational system in primary education, led to the weakening of scientific, theoretical, and academic dimensions characteristic of Pedagogy. Degree Program in Primary Education Teaching
