Since the antiquity the man searches for materials that can substitute partially or totally tissues of the human body. The metallic materials more used with that purpose are in three groups: the stainless steels, the cobalt based alloys and the titanium based alloys, this last one with prominence in relation to the other ones two. The titanium alloys are classified in agreement with the stable phase to the room temperature, could be, α, α + β e β. The commercially more used alloy in implants it is Ti-6A1-4V, a α + β type alloy, even so studies showed that the elements A1 and V present some toxicant effects. Seeking to solve that problem, it has been development alloys without the presence of these elements and that present properties adapted for its use as biomaterial. Among the different types of titanium alloys, the β type have a promising future, because they are the alloys that present smaller values of elasticity modulus. The Ti-35Nb-7Zr-5Ta alloys stands out, therefore it has the smallest elasticity modulus among them 55 GPa. The mechanical properties of these materials are strongly related with its thermal and mechanical processing, as well as the presence of interstitial elements as H. O. N and C. This work had as objective to study the influence of interstitial elements (in solid solution) in the physical and mechanical properties, and biocompatibility of the Ti-35Nb-7Zr-5Ta alloy. For that, measures of X-ray diffaction X, scanning electron microscopy and chemical analyses were performed, objectifying the characterization of the samples. Tests of direct and indirect cytotoxicity, mechanical spectroscopy and heat treatments were made, besides of doping the samples with oxygen, to verify that influence the interstitial elements have in the physical properties and biocompatibility of this alloy. In the cytotoxicity tests the samples not presented toxic effect... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)
