Resumo
Esta tese aborda a criação da diocese de Ribeirão Preto e o governo de seu primeiro bispo. Em junho de 1908, foi criada a diocese de Ribeirão Preto junto com outras cinco dioceses que passaram a fazer parte da Província Eclesiástica de São Paulo, projeto de D. Duarte Leopoldo e Silva teve por objetivo aumentar e consolidar a presença da Igreja no interior de São Paulo. O bispo eleito para Ribeirão Preto foi D. Alberto José Gonçalves, um padre político que exerceu os cargos de deputado e senador da República pelo Paraná e que veio com a incumbência arregimentar os católicos para o seio da Igreja e diminuir as forças da modernidade anticlerical e de outras crenças na região. O governo de D. Alberto estendeu-se de fevereiro de 1909 quando tomou posse até seu falecimento em maio de 1945. Ao longo dos 36 anos que esteve à frente da diocese de Ribeirão Preto, organizou o patrimônio, construiu e embelezou a catedral, incentivou os padres a construírem e reformarem suas matrizes. A obra pastoral de D. Alberto teve início com as visitas pastorais em sua diocese pregando, administrando os sacramentos e orientando padres e fieis. O incentivo para que os padres chamassem os leigos para participar das atividades da Igreja, a preocupação com a entrada de outras crenças cristãs e não cristãs marcou o governo de D. Alberto. Distante da política partidária e dos cargos eletivos, o Bispo de Ribeirão Preto preocupou-se em implantar o ensino religioso nas escolas públicas, a Ação Católica nas paróquias e, realizou um Congresso Eucarístico Diocesano. As diretrizes do Vaticano foram acolhidas e seguidas por D. Alberto e pelo bispo auxiliar que chegou em 1940 D. Manoel da Silveira D Elboux
This thesis focuses on the establishment of the diocese of Ribeirão Preto and the government of its first bishop. In June of 1908 the diocese of Ribeirão Preto was created along with five other dioceses which became part of the Ecclesiastical province of São Paulo, a project developed by D. Duarte Leopoldo e Silva with the intent of increasing and consolidating the presence of the Church in the interior of the state of São Paulo. The bishop elected for Ribeirão Preto was D. Alberto José Gonçalves, a priest and politician who had held office as congressman and senator for the Republic from the state of Paraná, and who came with the incumbency to recruit all Catholics in the task of weakening the forces of anticlerical modernism and of other beliefs in the region. D. Alberto s term in government extended from February 1909, when he took office, until his death in May of 1945. During the 36 years in which he was at the head of the diocese of Ribeirão Preto he organized the assets, constructed and embellished the cathedral, and encouraged his priests to build and renovate their parishes. D. Alberto s pastoral works began as pastoral visits in his diocese, preaching, administering the sacraments and orientating priests and lay people. His incentive to his priests to call upon the participation of lay people in church activities, as well as his preoccupation with the expansion of other faiths, both Christian and non-Christian, were important issues of D. Alberto s government. Maintaining a distance from political parties and from any elected office, the Bishop of Ribeirão Preto set about implanting religious teaching in the public schools, setting up the Ação Católica (Catholic Action) in the parishes and holding a Diocesan Eucharistic Congress. All of the directives of the Vatican were accepted and followed by D. Alberto and by his auxiliary bishop, D. Manoel da Silveira D Élboux, who arrived in 1940
