The aim of this study is to provide a diachronic framework of the Portuguese vowels, from the observation of three moments in the history of language: 13th, 15th and 16th centuries. The research corpora comprises the Cantigas de Santa Maria (CSM), by Alfonso X (13th century), the Cancioneiro Geral (CG), by Garcia de Resende (15th century), and Os Lusíadas, by Camões (16th century). The methodology adopted in this study consisted primarily in mapping and analysing the rhymes and spelling employed in these literary texts. From the analyses of the possibilities and impossibilities of rhyme, in the corpora considered, it was possible to obtain important evidences about the phonetic realization of the stressed and post-tonic vowels in the past of the Portuguese. Concerning the pretonic vowels, which are not covered by the poetic rhymes, this research sought, at writing of that time, the traces of the old pronunciation. Through this work, it was possible to obtain interesting data about the stressed, pretonic and post-tonic vowels of the Old, Middle and Modern Portuguese. Concerning the vowels of the stressed syllable, the rhymes of the CSM showed a distinction between open and closed mid vowels in the 13th century and, moreover, suggested a change in the pronunciation of the stressed vowel of some words, throughout the history of language. According to the rhymes of the CG and of Os Lusíadas, this change originated in variations of the 15th and 16th centuries, between open and closed mid vowels in stressed syllables. For the pretonic vowels, the spelling used in the three literary texts analyzed suggests the occurrence of a considerable phonetic variation between mid and high vowels of the ancient Portuguese. Finally, on the post-tonic vowels of 13th, 15th and 16th centuries, the data of this study also indicates a possible variation between mid and high vowels, but the rhymes and the spelling used in...
