The present work is of theoretical-bibliographic nature and takes as object the relations between the development of imagination and the role play, leading activity of the preschool age child, having as reference the assumptions of the historical-cultural psychology, mainly from Vigotski (2008; 2009), Vygotski (2012a, 2012b, 2014), Elkonin (2009), Leontiev (2017a, 2017b), Ignatiev (1960), Petrovski (1985), Rubinstein (1978) and Repina (1974). We started from a generalized acceptance that the play in childhood is an expression of the rich imagination of the child. We oppose this conception by seeking to analyze the social and cultural nature as well as a superior psychic function, as well as the play of social roles. In this sense, the exposition is organized in three moments. In the first of them we analyze the imagination as the transformation of the psychic images by seeking to evidence its genesis from the activity of work, besides showing the existing relations between this psychic function and the reality as a way to oppose the conceptions that understand this specific function as a possibility of escape from the reality. In the sequence, we analyzed the ways in which the transformations in the images occur with the objective of the formation of imaginative images, highlighting also what are the relations between the imagination and the other functions, given the interoperability of the human psychism. In this perspective, in the second moment, starting from the periodization of the development of psychism we searched to analyze the imagination and the role play within the periods called first year of life and early childhood evidencing that in these there is a creation of possibilities that may emerge, in the preschool age, the role play and that this activity is a necessary condition for the emergence and development of the imagination in that period. Specifically in relation to role play, we analyzed its structure and contents, the children's actions, the use of playful substitutes and the development of arbitrated conduct. In this sense, in the third moment we considered the pedagogical implications of the propositions presented previously. We argued that role play for not being a natural and spontaneous activity should be taught and enriched. Thus, we understand that in the school of Early Childhood Education the pedagogical work of teachers can influence in the development of both this activity and the children's imagination either by direct interference in the game or by the fulfillment of the educational function of education, namely, the transmission and socialization of the most developed historically and collectively produced by mankind and adapted to the preschool child, the recipient of education, as advocated by historical-critical pedagogy.
