This text presents the master's research developed in the scope of the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Química of Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquita Filho”, campus de Araraquara (PPG/IQ-CAr), linked to the Grupo de Pesquisa em Educação Química do IQ. The present research deals with how the Unesp’s pre- university preparatory courses are organized pedagogically and administratively, as well as points out their main approaches and departures. In order to conduct the research, the research problem was defined as: what are the approximations and deviations between the characteristics of the various Unesp’s pre-university preparatory courses regarding the concepts of Affirmative Action and University Extension? In order to make the answer to the big research problem feasible, as well as to operationalize the process of data collection and processing, the following research questions were defined: how much and what characteristics of the Unesp pre-university preparatory courses regarding the location, the infrastructure, the work team and administrative structure and the ways and hours of operation? What are the characteristics of the Unesp’s pre-university preparatory courses regarding the history, the pedagogical objectives and the pedagogical structure? What are the characteristics of the target audience and how are the approval and dropout count of Unesp’s pre- university preparatory courses in recent years been made? What are the relationships between the institutional objectives defined for the courses and the hegemonic practices developed in the different Unesp units? To achieve the objectives, a survey- type survey was conducted, and personal interviews were conducted with student coordinators from 23 Unesp’s pre-university preparatory courses. The responses were later categorized and analyzed, using descriptive statistics principles for the treatment of quantitative data and content analysis for qualitative data. It was possible to observe some important approximations between the main objectives in the different units of action, however the way in which they plan and carry out the actions in order to achieve these objectives show many divergences, mainly due to their spontaneous nature, since they are usually developed by the voluntary initiative of its members and under their own conceptions, without an institutionalization of them. This spontaneous character, among other factors, eventually creates obstacles for the pre-university preparatory courses to become spaces for the identification and repair of social ills, and once they are consolidated as policies of University Extension. The fact that actions are sometimes not explicit and dependent on the conceptions and initiative of the members of the course, without guarantees of being developed at other times, ends up creating barriers for these actions to be effectively transformed into affirmative actions. In view of the results, it is argued that the institutionalization of the objectives to all the pre-university preparatory courses, with the explicit of the activities that each of them develop to achieve these scopes, would be important steps to create an identity between the different pre-university preparatory courses of Unesp and also to approach them of the concept of university extension and consolidate their activities as effective affirmative actions.
