Resumo
No Oitocentos carioca, a pintura foi paulatinamente ganhando espaço na sociedade e nos impressos deste tempo. A partir da década de 1840, a imprensa da capital do império começa a publicar um número significativo de escritos sobre belas-artes e a preocupação dos artistas com as técnicas da arte de pintar cresce dentro da Academia Imperial de Belas Artes. Considerando que é no século XIX que os propósitos de civilizar e de forjar uma nacionalidade ganham força, o principal objetivo dessa dissertação é interrogar – a partir da análise das críticas impressas sobre belas-artes, com enfoque na pintura, lançadas no Rio de Janeiro entre os anos de 1840 e 1885, data primeira obra dedicada às belas artes publicada na capital do império – o que era pintura para o período, que lugar essa atividade ocupou na imprensa carioca e como essas publicações buscaram forjar uma nacionalidade brasileira. O caminho da institucionalização da arte de pintar, a criação de modelos para a pintura e seu papel para se pensar um passado brasileiro é, pois, o propósito desse trabalho.
In Nineteenth Century Rio de Janeiro, painting had gradually been gaining room in the society and in the press of that time. After the Eighteen Forties, the press of the Empire’s capital started to publish a significant amount of writing about the fine arts and the artists’ concern with the painting techniques grew inside the Academia Imperial de Belas Artes. Considering that it’s in the Nineteenth Century that the purposes of civilizing and forging a nationality gained strength, the main goal of this dissertation is to interrogate – starting from the analysis of the printed criticism about the fine arts, focused on the painting, launched in Rio de Janeiro between 1840 and 1885, date of the first work dedicated to the fine arts published in the Empire’s capital – what painting was for that period, what place has this activity occupied in the carioca press and how the published materials aimed to forge a Brazilian nationality. The way to the institutionalization of the art of painting, the creation of models for the painting and its role for thinking a Brazilian past is, therefore, the purpose of the present work.
