Resumo

Usually, mining activities and their neighborhoods are at odds, with huge losses to the latter, who for lack of other housing options must live right in the area, with dust, sound and vibration problems. Using the data from the Trevo mine, an underground coal mine, in the Carboniferus Basin in the south of Santa Catarina state, this study puts in evidence the necessary relationship between mining companies and inhabitants to promote improved mining methods and better environmental conditions. This study also tries to make clear and to alert the company of the citizens claims, with data showing the problems that a lack of planning provokes and an adequate study about risks and hazards in surface buildings.
