The aim of this work is to study the social role of art in the work of Italian artist Bassano Vaccarini (1914-2002), from his two articles published in 1947 and his sculptural production of the 1980s and 1990s. Vaccarini was born in Italy, but immigrated to Brazil in the context of the second postwar period and was part of activities that spanned various cultural spheres for almost seventy years: he organized exhibitions of Modern Art, exhibited at the Domus Gallery and the São Paulo Art Biennials, He was the set designer of the Brazilian Comedy Theater (TBC) and the Vera Cruz Film Company, along with other foreign set designers and directors, he founded a School of Plastic Arts, and created an Experimental Film Center. These activities in the city and state of São Paulo marked a period of innovation in theater and arts made in Brazil and were consolidated as important initiatives of the period. At the same time, based on the mentioned articles, Vaccarini observed what he called the Fine Arts crisis, caused by an exacerbated individualism in Modern Art. Thus, he proposed a way to overcome such a crisis based on the articulation between the contribution of the Renaissance, reestablishing the nexus between artist and society. In 1956, he immigrated to the interior of the state of São Paulo and conducted an intense cultural movement in the region, which subsequently resulted in the realization of an aesthetic project in the city of Altinópolis. As a guiding hypothesis, we worked with the idea that Vaccarini recovered the decorative functions of art, however he was essentially concerned with portraying the social dimension in public spaces, following, therefore, his conceptions of the path already established in 1947. Consequently,we intended to analyze the main conditions of Fine Arts in the country and the crisis dialogue which existed at the time amongst various intellectuals, such as Mário de Andrade and Mario Pedrosa, and to select sculptural ensembles in order to analyze this relationship marked by the clash between modernity and tradition.
