Based on the Theory of Language Variation and Change, this work studies the speech of Muzambinho-MG and Cabo Verde-MG, both known for their rural characteristics. The linguistic phenomenon analyzed is the alternation between the pronominal forms that represent the 1st person plural in the subject position. We selected this object of study because, in addition to the variation between nós and a gente, we also noticed that there is a phonological variation, since the inhabitants of this region make use of the variants “nóis” and “nói”. The general objectives of this research are to establish locally the social meanings of the forms in variation, and to verify if there is a possible process of linguistic change in such uses. For this, we comparatively analyzed the speech of informants with different and non-continuous age groups, and we identified which are the linguistic and social factors that explain the uses of variant forms. A sample of sociolinguistic interviews was built with 24 informants, 12 from each city, of different age groups, divided between men and women, with different levels of schooling. To access the social meanings, a questionnaire of subjective reactions was applied. From this, there was an opposition between nói and a gente, since the same man, when using the nói variant, is perceived as poorly educated, country dweller and resident of rural neighborhoods, and when using a gente, is considered educated, of high social class and resident of closed condominiums. Regarding the analysis of linguistic production, it was noticed that the two communities differ in the distribution of use of pronouns: in Cabo Verde, there is a balance between the variants, with 51% of nós and 49% of a gente; on the other hand, in Muzambinho, there is a greater use of a gente (58%). Furthermore, when including the phonological variants of nós in the analysis, we observed that, in both cities, the variant nós is little used, being restricted to people with higher education in age groups 2 (35-50 years) and 3 (over 60 years). As for a gente, in Cabo Verde, it is most used: by women and people aged 2 (35-50) and 3 (over 60) and, in Muzambinho: by graduates; and also by individuals in groups 2 (35-50 years old) and 3 (over 60 years old). On the other hand, noi is more used, in Cabo Verde, by men and young people (18-25 years old) and, in Muzambinho, by people without higher education and by young people (18-25 years old).
