Jet fuel remediation at paulínia refinery (REPLAN), São Paulo, Brazil
Abstract
Accidental release of light non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPL), e.g., petroleum based fuels, is common throughout the world and it is the principal cause of groundwater contamination by chemical compounds. Rainfall, volume of recovered oil, free phase thickness, water level fluctuation, and plume dispersal were examined. Seasonal water table level variation was the main factor controlling mobility, stability, and oil volume recovery in the contaminated site. Monitored natural attenuation was the main remediation process for dissolved phase. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 2006 AIChE Annual Meeting (San Francisco, CA 11/12-17/2006).
