The objective of this thesis was to analyze and understand, based on the explanation and interpretation of teaching narratives, in a historical, cultural and social perspective, which are the social representations (CHARTIER, 1990) that Portuguese Language teachers in the final years of Elementary School ( 6th to 9th grade) have about literature, literary reading, teaching and the conditions for the formation of literary readers in the school environment. For this, we used the autobiographical method Nóvoa and Finger (2 010), Josso (1995), Souza (2006) which led us to access the reality investigated from the autobiographical discourses of six teachers who work in three municipal schools in the interior of São Paulo. Through the social representations that emerged from s uch discourses, we discussed how trends in teaching reading and literature emerge among teachers, questioning them through a theoretical and methodological dicussion. The empirical field research took place through two data collection procedures, selected based on the strategies and nature of the actions and situations investigated: questionnaire and interview. For analysis and interpretation of the information, we related the data obtained in the collection and followed with the content analysis proposed b y Bardin (2000). In the communications of the investigated subjects, in their answers, we looked for content that referred to the social representations already mentioned and, through the analysis, we related such representations with the teaching practice s developed in the classroom and the possible contributions of these to the formation of literary readers. in school. As a result, we infer that the contact with books and with practices of literary reading in the family and in the school marked the trajec tory of reading formation of the teachers, as well as the oral culture accessed in these two contexts. The teachers also evidenced representations about the Letters course in their professional trajectories and the awareness of the formation process itself , of the position they occupy as subject readers who collaborate to form new readers of literature. In this way, we observe and analyze how the social representations exposed in these narrated stories work as models about what and how to do, passing throug h their pedagogical practices and their positions towards students.
