This research has the general objective of performing a linguistic-discourse analysis of joining mechanisms (JMs) in the comparison between narrative and argumentative discourse traditions (DTs), produced by subjects regularly enrolled in the 7th grade of Middle School, and is aimed at linguists and Portuguese professors. In this sense, it is justified for collaborating with the area of linguistic studies and with the construction of a scientific framework related to children's writing, seeking to understand the articulation of grammatical and textual-discursive aspects. It is based on the concept of constitutively heterogeneous writing (CORRÊA, 1997), associated with a dialogic conception of text, from the concept of DTs (KABATEK, 2006), and the functionalist model of joining (RAIBLE, 2001). The general objective unfolds in the following specific objectives: (i) to describe and analyze the JMs, in texts belonging to narrative and argumentative DTs, in the written mode of enunciation, from the semantic relations and the interdependence existing between the component portions of the complex sentence; (ii) to search for traces of the relation between the behavior of the join and the heterogeneity of writing, by means of oral/spoken and literate/written traces, based on relations between the functioning of the JMs and the axes of the genesis of writing and the institutionalized written code; and (iii) to relate the functioning of the JMs to the characteristics of the DTs analyzed, in an approach of this functioning as practices resulting from the dialogic with already spoken/heard and written/read (axis 3). The corpus is composed of 26 narrative and 26 argumentative texts and the methodology presents a qualitative-quantitative analysis, with a survey of token and type frequencies (BYBEE, 2003) of the JMs. The results achieved, according to specific objective (i), showed that the paratactic architecture prevails in both DTs, pointing out what is fixed in these traditions, and that the relations of addition, cause, posterior time and contrast were the most frequent in the texts analyzed. In relation to the specific objective (ii), the subjects circulate through axes 1 and 2, with higher frequency, in both DTs, for axis 1, in a writing that is constituted from the imaginary of the subjects about (their) written way of enunciating, which is marked, on the surface of the text, with greater repeatability, from the juxtaposition and and, acting as gestures that point to the context of enunciation. To axis 2, MJs are linked in the form of syntactic parallelism, within a closed and conventional list, and in spaces configured by greater tactical-semantic dependence. In relation to specific objective (iii), in axis 3, the narrative and argumentative complex DTs are compositionally constituted by means of blends with different DTs, through the dialog with what is already spoken/heard and written/read. Thus, this research illustrates the simultaneity of the three axes, taken in theoreticalmethodological articulation with the concept of DT, in the light of the observation of the JMs in a linguistic-discursive approach.
