Books are still the main teaching materials available in Brazilian public schools, they are distributed through the Programa Nacional do Livro Didático (PNLD). The contents contained in textbooks present distortions in understanding and may contribute to distorted views of science. Through a bibliographic brief survey in the databases Portal Periódico Capes e Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações (BDTD), few studies addressed the content of radioactivity and the analysis of textbooks. The research that gave rise to this study investigated Irène Joliot-Curie and artificial radioactivity, pointing to radioactivity as a possible classical content. Thus, it was felt the need to analyze their contribution to textbooks considering the importance of historical-philosophical contextualization in the teaching of such content. Therefore, the objective of this work is to understand through the analysis of the textbooks approved in the NTP 2018 the approach of history and philosophy of science in the content of radioactivity. Six chemistry textbooks were analyzed in this study, using five a priori categories based on the literature of the area. The organized categories are: 1. Linearity of concepts considering their historical context: analyzes how the process of construction of scientific ideas is addressed in textbooks; 2. Description of the characters and their image as heroes: analyzes how scientists are mentioned in textbooks and what information appears; 3. References, primary and secondary sources: analyzes which sources are mentioned in textbooks; 4. Social contextualization: analyzes how historical and social contextualization is performed in textbooks; 5. Explicit mention of the History and Philosophy of Science: identifies whether the History and Philosophy of Science are cited in textbooks. In the analyses, it was observed that the books present the advances of concepts according to the years of discoveries. Although knowledge follows a chronological order, it was interpreted that in the books there is little contribution of the History and Philosophy of Science, since we have little historical contextualization and information from scientists, besides the contents being summarized and transposed to be presented in the books.
