Resumo
As afecções ortopédicas, em especial as fraturas, são recorrentes na rotina clínica da medicina aviária, sejam elas em aves de vida livre ou nos “pets" não convencionais. Por esse motivo, o médico veterinário deve manter-se atualizado em relação ao manejo de fraturas nesses pacientes, a fim de optar pelo tratamento mais eficaz e que irá trazer os melhores resultados para cada caso. Tendo isto em vista, o presente relato almeja descrever o tratamento cirúrgico de uma fratura proximal e cominutiva de tarsometatarso esquerdo em seriema (Cariama cristata), por meio da redução aberta com posterior estabilização com fixador esquelético tipo II em resina acrílica-pino. Para embasamento do caso clínico, são apresentadas informações acerca do processo de osteossíntese em aves após intervenção cirúrgica, bem como das diferentes técnicas que podem ser utilizadas no tratamento de fraturas e possíveis complicações decorrentes do seu manejo inadequado. Em síntese, constatou-se que o uso do fixador esquelético externo tipo II mostrou-se eficaz para promover a estabilização da fratura no caso descrito, sendo capaz de gerar consolidação óssea adequada e evitar lesões em tecidos e vasos sanguíneos adjacentes a lesão, o que possibilitou a soltura do animal após sua recuperação.
Orthopedic conditions, especially fractures, are common in the clinical routine of avian medicine, whether in free-ranging birds or in exotic pets. For this reason, the veterinarian must keep updated about the management of fractures in these patients, in order to choose the most effective treatment that will bring the best results for each case. With this in mind, the present report aims to describe the surgical treatment of a proximal and comminuted fracture of the left tarsometatarsus in a seriema (Cariama cristata), by means of open reduction with subsequent stabilization with type II skeletal fixator and acrylic-pin resin. To support the clinical case, this article presents information about the osteosynthesis process in birds after surgical intervention, as well as the different techniques that can be used in the treatment of fractures and possible complications resulting from their inadequate management. Finally, the use of type II external skeletal fixator proved to be effective in promoting fracture stabilization in the case described, being able to generate adequate bone consolidation and avoid injury to tissues and blood vessels adjacent to the injury, which allowed the animal to be released after its recovery.
