This article brings some notes about the short film Choque cultural, directed by Zelito Viana, whose thread is the historic interview by Celso Furtado to the director in Rio de Janeiro in 1975. We contextualize the interview and the circumstances that brought them together. Without intending to do cinematographic criticism, we connect Furtado’s speech and the images from Zelito’s film and we relate Furtado’s reflections in the interview with the works he published in the period around the making of the short film and in the 1980s and 1990s.

The aims of this article are three. First, to present results of the potentialities of the historical source called parish registers of land. This source is related to the village of Araraquara, province of São Paulo, Brazil. They were produced during the years of 1850 to 1866. Second, make comparison of the results to others researches which used the same analytical categories and source. Third, present the analytical conclusions about the territorial settlement at this specific region. This market shows more dynamic than the one of Campinas and Ubatuba, even though, the traditional historiography has pointed that it was more solid in older settlement. Also, the frequency’s transmission of the biggest land size of inherited ones was proporcionally larger than the purchased ones. So, it characterizes this zone as a frontier and as a kinship market.

From the Rule of Thumb to the Rule of the Algorithms: Command and Control in Ride-Hailing Platforms
(2022-01-01) Jeronimo, Rodrigo Constantino [UNESP]; Scorsone, Eric Anthony [UNESP]; Guedes, Sebastião Neto Ribeiro [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP); Michigan State University
By using a Commonsian approach to the mechanisms of control present in the wealth-creating managerial transactions, we aim to investigate the command-and-control relationship between digital platforms of ride-hailing services and their drivers. Despite being commonly defined as technology companies acting as multisided markets, thus, intermediaries between its end-users, the on-demand ridesharing platforms also share the feature of controlling their labor force—usually working under self-employed statuses—through opaque and unilaterally defined working rules by its algorithms. We argue that, by recovering Commons’ idea of going concerns and their constitutive elements of going plants and going business, platforms can be seen as governance structures whose algorithmic mechanisms have systematized with high detailed capacity the working rules of their services (car rides), substituting the role played by workers’ experience and customs in establishing the methods of work. This transaction between workers and platform results in a state of insecurity on the side of the workers, marked by a lack of democratic participation and asymmetric bargaining power.

This article aims to contribute to the history of contemporaneous economic thought. It deals with Richard Kahn’s fellowship dissertation, and its influence on the development of the theory of imperfect competition and on the theory of oligopoly. It discusses the author’s claim of being the first to create the “kinked demand curve” even before the work of the Oxford Economic Research Group was initiated. It also argues that he developed a way of measuring the “degree of monopoly” before Kalecki.

Some properties for exact generalized processes
(2015-01-01) Simsen, Jacson; Capelato, Érika [UNESP]; Universidade Federal de Itajubá; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
In this work, we define an exact generalized process and we establish some results such as monotonicity, compactness, and upper semicontinuity for the multivalued process defined by the exact generalized process. The main result is on compactness, invariance, and attraction properties of ω-limit sets.

Strategy: Notes for an economic and historical approach
(2021-01-01) de Carvalho, Enéas Gonçalves [UNESP]; Guedes, Sebastião Neto Ribeiro [UNESP]; Gomes, Rogério [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
The objective of this article is to elaborate an economic and historical approach to the notion/concept of strategy. More specifically, it aims to propose a definition of strategy that helps to unravel this important topic from a paralysing tangle of schools, approaches and definitions. It was also sought to delimit more clearly its nature and what can (and what should not) be considered as strategy. For that, the research work adopts a historical perspective and, as starting point, the approach proposed by Simon (1993). Besides that, it was made an additional effort to specify better and enrich the Simon’s drive-way with the contributions from some other pertinent authors – mainly from the Keynesian and Schumpeterian schools.

Efficiency and sustainability: an economic, social, environmental and sustainable analysis of sugar cane mills in São Paulo
(2022-01-01) Dotta e Silva, Gabriel Malta Campos [UNESP]; Périco, Ana Elisa [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
Concerns regarding environmental footprint have been the key in sustaining the relationship between competitiveness and sustainability in a changing capitalist context. Brazil has a solid level of heterogeneity in the efficiency of its production chains due to its legal and political characteristics. The Brazilian sugar-energy sector poses a strong influence on the economy, it is the pioneer in replacing the use of fossil fuels for renewable sources, and it is a sector marked by chain efficiency differences. In this context, this study aims to analyze the efficiency of the sugar cane mills in the state of Sao Paulo, from 2007 to 2016, from an economic, social, environmental, and sustainable point of view. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is used to generate robust and complete efficiency models. Large-classified plants were ranked with economic efficiency, due to economies of scale, and small-classified plants ranked benchmarks in the social and environmental analysis, showing that the operational size bias is not necessarily a prerequisite to rank benchmark units. Finally, it was seen a preponderance of small and large-classified mill plants, along with ethanol-classified plants, in the sustainable benchmark ranking.

A Concept of Two Authors: Commons and Williamson on Transactions
(2021-01-01) Guedes, Sebastião Neto Ribeiro [UNESP]; Jeronimo, Rodrigo Constantino [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
The idea of transactions in social sciences was conceived by John Rogers Commons in the beginning of the 1920s, representing a mental instrument capable of describing capitalism and its peculiarities. On the other hand, Oliver Williamson’s approach in late 1970s reduced the concept to the mere transfer of goods and services in institutions that are or are not guided by the price system. The aim of this article is to present the characteristics of these two different approaches to the concept of transactions, evidencing the role of epistemological aspects and investigative purposes (referred to relevant research context and problem originated in it) as the causes of its metamorphosis. John Commons’ effort to build up a concept not only capable of transcending the idea of exchange but also of giving a totalising perspective to the interpretation of capitalism is emptied in Williamson’s appropriation of the term. By utilising Commons’ conception of transactions and trying to subsume it to his ‘general theory of transaction costs’, Williamson limits its scope and meaning, adjusting it without producing rupture with the neoclassical economy. This article tries to catch the vicissitudes of this concept found in both authors. JEL: B15, B25, B31.

Understanding Clinical Significance in Rehabilitation: A Primer for Researchers and Clinicians
(2022-01-01) Armijo-Olivo, Susan; de Castro-Carletti, Ester Moreira; Calixtre, Letícia Bojikian; de Oliveira-Souza, Ana Izabela Sobral; Mohamad, Norazlin; Fuentes, Jorge; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
ABSTRACT: The objective of this review was to summarize the concept of clinical significance and associated methods focusing on the area of rehabilitation to provide a resource to rehabilitation researchers and clinicians. Studies were searched on electronic databases from inception until July 28, 2020, with no date or language limits. Manual searches as well as Scopus forward citation for relevant references were performed. Narrative synthesis of study results was performed. Definitions of the concepts related to clinical significance, ways of calculating, and interpreting each method were provided using rehabilitation examples. An explanation of methods to evaluate clinical significance (distribution, anchor, and opinion-based methods) and their advantages and disadvantages were also provided. Considering the limitations of statistical significance in assuring meaningfulness of results, clinical interpretation of research outcomes and the report of clinical significance in intervention trials should be a priority in rehabilitation research. When possible, the use of multiple methods (distribution, anchor, and opinion based) is recommended. Thus, clinical researchers are encouraged to present results in a manner that allow the rehabilitation professionals to easily interpret and implement those results in their clinical practice.

The fiscal crisis of states and the fiscal recovery regime: The federative déjà vu
(2021-05-01) Torrezan, Raphael Guilherme Araujo [UNESP]; de Paiva, Cláudio César [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
This article aims to discuss the fiscal crisis of the Brazilian states and the Fiscal Recovery Regime (FRR) enacted in 2017, whose adjustment measures are considered fundamental for the balance of state public accounts. Under the federative perspective, these adjustments represent a weakening of the states since such measures affect their political and administrative autonomy. The state of Rio de Janeiro was chosen as the subject of this research because it was the only state to join the FRR since its enactment, and the study used data from the years 2008 to 2019. The findings suggest that the austerity measures adopted by the state of Rio de Janeiro were not enough to guarantee financial stability and the rebalancing of public accounts. Among the results, we highlight that the state remained financially insolvent and the indebtedness for the period grew. The only positive result within the terms of the FRR was the reduction in the state’s personnel expenses. Finally, it is noted that until the penultimate quarter of 2019, the state of Rio de Janeiro did not comply with the terms of the agreement signed with the federal government.

The brazilian sugar and alcohol sector: Evolution, productive chain and innovations
(2011-01-01) Strachman, Eduardo [UNESP]; Pupin, Gustavo Milan [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
The sugar and alcohol sector is one of the fastest growing and developing areas of the Brazilian economy, although some specialists worry unduly that sugarcane cultivation will replace food-crop plantations. This article analyses how Brazil and the State of São Paulo became major players in that sector, and expounds a theory on the relevance of innovations for increasing competitiveness, productivity and the number of byproducts. The study analyses global value chains to gauge their importance and gain a better understanding of the sugar and alcohol sector. It shows that the value chain is under national control, unlike most other chains in which Brazil participates. Lastly, the article highlights the most recent innovations in the sector, which reflect a drive to improve competitiveness.

Practices and perceptions about breastfeeding: Consensus and dissensus in the daily care in a Family Health Unit
(2009-01-01) Marques, Emanuele Souza; Cotta, Rosângela Minardi Mitre; Franceschini, Sylvia do Carmo Castro; Botelho, Maria Izabel Vieira [UNESP]; Araújo, Raquel Maria Amaral; Junqueira, Túlio da Silva; Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV); Universidade de Valência; Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP); Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP); Instituto Fernandes Figueira/Fiocruz
This study is based on a qualitative research, and has two objectives: to identify the importance of breastfeeding for professionals who work in the Family Health Program; and to highlight convergent and divergent themes concerning breastfeeding among health care professionals and mothers. For data collection, the semi-structured and focus group were used. The study involved 17 professionals working in basic health care units and 58 mothers of children under two years old in the city of Coimbra, Mina Gerais State. The most important outcomes were that breastfeeding was regarded as an obligation by mothers, that the speech refers to the importance of a professional trained in lactation. The discourse analysis also highlighted an imbalance between the knowledge reported by the professional and daily practice of the health service. In this sense, the importance of continuing and permanent education policies are key elements for training in breastfeeding, and are indicators of health planning actions.

Cooperative federalism in obstruction: Intergovernmental crash in the pandemic
(Fundacao Getulio Vargas Escola Adm Empresas Sao Paulo, 2022-05-01) Paiva, Claudio Cesar de [UNESP]; Araujo Torrezan, Raphael Guilherme [UNESP]; Fernandes de Paiva, Suzana Cristina [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
This article aims to show that the expectation of a robust and effective response to the sanitary and economic damages caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, through the strengthening of the institutional culture of cooperative federalism, was frustrated. The result has been related to the violation of subnational autonomy by the Federal Government, which has obstructed a historical movement of decentralization and cooperative federalism, fostering litigation and preventing the construction of coordinated institutional strategies with shared responsibilities.
