The intraspecific aggressiveness of matrinxã (Brycon amazonicus) causes stress and cannibalism in its captive breeding; the understanding of the factors that influence this behavior is necessary to the technology of production of this species. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the raising the level of cortisol, gender and prior residence in agonistic interaction of juvenile matrinxã. The fish were isolated and fed with control diet or supplemented with cortisol diet, and then matched with conspecifics of the same size treated with control diet. The pairing was done in neutral aquariums, or in the aquarium of the animal treated by establishing a resident-intruder interaction; after the fight the sex from the fishes was checked to test the effect of gender. In animals paired in neutral territory, was increased aggression caused by administration of cortisol in direct aggression behaviors that define the winner of the fight. In the same way, in the study of the resident and intruders animals, the 38 elevation of cortisol further increased the advantage in aggression and confrontation conferred by territoriality. In relation to gender, the males proved more agressives than females. We concluded that the elevation of cortisol causes increased aggressiveness, therefore, stressful events can increase the agonistic display in this species
