A macro-level circular economy index: theoretical proposal and application in European Union countries
(2023-01-01) de Oliveira Frascareli, Fernanda Cortegoso [UNESP]; Furlan, Marcelo; Mariano, Enzo Barberio [UNESP]; Jugend, Daniel [UNESP]; Centro Universitário Sagrado Coração (UNISAGRADO); Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP); Aeronautics Institute of Technology (ITA)
The objective of this study was to propose a circular economy index applicable at a macro-level (i.e., countries). To achieve this objective, the snowball approach to literature reviews was adopted to find possible macro-level circular economy dimensions and indicators. Then, 10 indicators relating to these dimensions were identified in international databases. Finally, it was applied the benefit of the doubt (BoD) approach for data envelopment analysis (DEA), social network analysis (SNA) and principal component analysis (PCA) to build a macro-level circular economy index (MaCEI) for 18 European Union countries. The main results were as follows: (i) the identification of 52 potential indicators related to the circular economy at a macro-level were divided into 10 dimensions, (ii) a ranking of the performance of the 18 European countries in terms of their circular economy, (iii) the identification and analysis of the best circular economy practices at a national level (benchmarks), and (iv) the establishment of targets for each country. By offering a circular economy indicator and a well-established country ranking, this study contributes to the effective development of environmental standards that support public policies and national programs on the circular economy, in addition to guiding policy managers in driving the adoption of the circular economy at a macro-level.

Modeling quality, satisfaction and perceived crowding in public healthcare: A study with low-income Brazilian patients
(2023-01-01) Marcato, João Guilherme [UNESP]; Da Silva, Hermes Moretti Ribeiro [UNESP]; Luiz, Octaviano Rojas [UNESP]; Mariano, Enzo Barberio [UNESP]; Paro, Carlos Eduardo; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP); Universidade de São Paulo (USP)
This paper is one of the first to propose a research model to assess the quality and satisfaction perceived by low-income Brazilian patients using public healthcare services, under the moderating effect of perceived crowding. The model was evaluated from data obtained from 417 patients, and its proposed relationships and statistics were tested through Structural Equation Modeling using a Partial Least Squares approach (PLS-SEM). To explore the moderating effect of perceived crowding, the sample was divided into two groups and tested by employing multi-group analysis (MGA). The results show that Reliability, Safety, Tangibles, Empathy and Responsiveness have a positive effect on Perceived Healthcare Quality (PHQ), which, in turn, has a marked effect on patient satisfaction (PS), ergo, PHQ acts as antecedent of PS. However, perceived crowding has no moderating effect on any relationship in the model.

A Transition Toward a Circular Economy: Insights from Brazilian National Policy on Solid Waste
(2022-01-01) Paes, Luís [UNESP]; Bezerra, Barbara [UNESP]; Deus, Rafael [UNESP]; Jugend, Daniel [UNESP]; Battistelle, Rosane [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP); Faculdades Integradas de Jahu (FIJ)
This chapter discusses how the actual Brazilian National Policy on Solid Waste (BNPSW) - Law n. 12.305/2010 - aligns with the circular economy (CE) principles considering, especially, its potential to close the loop in solid waste production. This study’s emphasis is to recognize the main points to enable the CE with the aid of already existing Brazilian environmental policies, using tools as the waste hierarchy, reverse logistics, and shared postconsumer responsibility for a more efficient waste management. To contribute to this discussion, this chapter has set on four-part contributions: Part 1 begins by laying out a theoretical systematic understanding of how BNPSW contributes to the CE thinking implementation in Brazil. Part 2 presents and discusses all potential barriers to the adoption of solid waste management from a CE perspective. Part 3 develops a SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunities, and threats) analysis from BNPSW under a CE perspective. Finally, Part 4 presents a conclusion with the main findings and recommendations to assist the transition to CE in waste management legislation.

Crossing actors' boundaries towards circular ecosystems in the organic food sector: Facing the challenges in an emerging economy context
(2023-06-25) Ferrari, Aline Gabriela [UNESP]; Jugend, Daniel [UNESP]; Armellini, Fabiano; Barbalho, Sanderson César Macedo; Carvalho, Marly Monteiro de; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP); Polytechnique Montréal; University of Brasília (UnB); Universidade de São Paulo (USP)
The demand for organic food is increasing worldwide. Studies have shown that the circular economy can bring environmental and operational improvements to the food sector. However, little is known about how the circular economy can contribute to organic food. From the perspective of circular ecosystems, this exploratory study aims to contribute to the emerging debate by identifying and analyzing the relationships between different actors in an ecosystem of organic food producers. Addressing this objective, a case study was carried out involving seven actors from an organic food ecosystem in Brazil. The main results revealed: (i) that the production of organic food is aligned with the principles of the circular economy; (ii) that the common goal of using and disseminating organic agriculture facilitates alignment between the actors in an ecosystem; (iii) the important role of the orchestrator, mainly to coordinate the different actors and technically support small producers/farmers; and (iv) that collaboration in an ecosystem favors the reuse of “waste” between farmers. In addition, our results identified that ecosystems face bureaucratic barriers to obtaining resources, and there is little collaboration between the actors and universities.

Models for Predicting Velopharyngeal Competence Based on Speech and Resonance Errors and Velopharyngeal Area Estimation
(2023-01-01) Scarmagnani, Rafaeli Higa; Lohmander, Anette; Salgado, Manoel Henrique [UNESP]; Fukushiro, Ana Paula; Trindade, Inge Elly Kiemle; Yamashita, Renata Paciello; Universidade de São Paulo (USP); Karolinska University Hospital; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
Objective: To develop tools for predicting velopharyngeal competence (VPC) based on auditory-perceptual assessment and its correlation with objective measures of velopharyngeal orifice area. Design: Methodological study. Participants and Methods: Sixty-two patients with repaired cleft palate, aged 6 to 45 years, underwent aerodynamic evaluation by means of the pressure-flow technique and audiovisual recording of speech samples. Three experienced speech-language pathologists analysed the speech samples by rating the following resonance, visual, and speech variables: hypernasality, audible nasal air emission, nasal turbulence, weak pressure consonants, facial grimacing, active nonoral errors, and overall velopharyngeal competence. The correlation between the perceptual speech variables and velopharyngeal orifice area estimates was analysed with Spearman's correlation coefficient. Two statistical models (discriminant and exploratory) were used to predict VPC based on the orifice area estimates. Sensitivity and specificity analyses were performed to verify the clinical applicability of the models. Results: There was a strong correlation between VPC (based on the orifice area estimates) and each speech variable. Both models showed 88.7% accuracy in predicting VPC. The sensitivity and specificity for the discriminant model were 92.3% and 97.2%, respectively, and 96.2% and 94.4% for the exploratory model. Conclusion: Two predictor models based on ratings of resonance, visual, and speech variables and a simple calculation of a composite variable, SOMA (Eng. “sum”), were developed and found to be efficient in predicting VPC defined by orifice estimates categories based on aerodynamic measurements. Both tools may contribute to the diagnosis of velopharyngeal dysfunction in clinical practice.

Prospects for a circular bioeconomy in urban ecosystems: Proposal for a theoretical framework
(2022-12-20) Paes, Luis Alberto Bertolucci [UNESP]; Stolte Bezerra, Barbara [UNESP]; Jugend, Daniel [UNESP]; Liar Agudo, Fabiana [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP); Science and Technology of Sao Paulo (IFSP)
The interconnectedness of value chains, the different motivations of actors, and the complexity of urban ecosystems (UE) have given rise to calls for more comprehensive approaches to diagnosis urban sustainability. In this regard, the circular bioeconomy (CBE) is attractive for, in theory, it ensures regenerative capacity and offers the possibility of improving the resilience of ecosystem services. However, there is a risk that the delineation of the narrative will be limited to issues narrowly defined by key actors, without considering value creation beyond financial. This paper explores how the alignment of CBE principles can support the services provided by UE, considering their socio-ecological needs. To this end, we propose an adaptive theoretical framework supported by a qualitative and comparative analysis of the current scientific literature. The main contributions of the paper are: (i) propose an original structure using the nature-based solutions (NbS) concept as background and (ii) provide a new typology built from the biophysical boundaries, drivers, barriers, strategies, and indicators identified. The framework presents itself as an instrument capable of guiding further research in the thematic area, facilitating the identification of trade-offs, benefits, and co-benefits, and represents a step forward in the search toward generalisation, reducing uncertainties and utopian notions that mould the CBE.

Linking product design and durability: A review and research agenda
(2022-09-01) Mesa, Jaime A.; Gonzalez-Quiroga, Arturo; Aguiar, Marina Fernandes [UNESP]; Jugend, Daniel [UNESP]; Universidad del Norte; Pontificia Universidad Javeriana; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
Durability has become a valuable design aspect for designers, manufacturers, service providers, and end-of-life actors. Nowadays, developing products for new business models based on renting and servitization practices is of paramount importance. Furthermore, durability enables the application of circularity strategies for product lifespan extension, including reuse, repair, refurbish, and remanufacture. However, despite the growing trend around durability, there is no precise tracing of its evolution, implementation, and potential benefits from the product design stage. Therefore, this article aims to analyze the existing literature about durability and its relationship with the circular economy concept starting from the product design process, uncovering potential research directions, challenges, and trends for its application. A total of 147 articles were selected and analyzed from 40 years of research using two main approaches. First, a keyword-based analysis was used to identify trending topics around the concept of durability. Second, a content-based analysis was used, encompassing four main aspects: objectives and methodology; actors involved and lifecycle phases; circular economy strategies; and design phase, design attributes, and type of products involved. The analysis identified how the concept has evolved during the last four decades, indicating that future trends envisage methodologies, assessment tools, and guidelines to support product life extension.

From green advertising to sustainable behavior: a systematic literature review through the lens of value-belief-norm framework
(2023-01-01) Lima, Pedro Augusto Bertucci [UNESP]; Falguera, Fernanda Pereira Sartori [UNESP]; Silva, Hermes Moretti Ribeiro da [UNESP]; Maciel, Suely [UNESP]; Mariano, Enzo Barberio [UNESP]; Elgaaied-Gambier, Leila; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP); TBS Education
In the current ecological context, advertising and communication emerge as valuable tools for raising awareness and encouraging sustainable behavior. For this communication to be effective, it is necessary to understand the process through which a green message translates into sustainable decisions and how it interacts with individuals’ pro-environmental predispositions and intrinsic motivations. From this perspective, we conducted a systematic review of the literature linking two bodies of research related to the effectiveness of green advertising, on the one hand, and the determinants of pro-environmental behavior, on the other. The main contribution of this article is the development of a conceptual framework that is specific to green advertising. This framework combines the stages of cognitive processing of persuasive messages and the value-belief-norm theory of environmentalism, as well as other internal and external factors (e.g. personal capabilities, contextual factors, and affective variables). Based on our results, we identify gaps and opportunities for future research.

Energy Transition in Non-Euro Countries from Central and Eastern Europe: Evidence from Panel Vector Error Correction Model
(2022-12-01) Apostu, Simona Andreea; Panait, Mirela; Balsalobre-Lorente, Daniel; Ferraz, Diogo [UNESP]; Rădulescu, Irina Gabriela; Bucharest University of Economic Studies; Institute of National Economy; Petroleum-Gas University of Ploiesti; University of Castilla-La Mancha; University of Alicante; University of Hohenheim; Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP); Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
The countries of Central and Eastern Europe, from the non-euro area, have completed the process of economic transition before joining the European Union. Achieving a certain level of economic development and membership in the European Union have generated their involvement in a new transition process, namely the energy transition. Concerns about promoting the low carbon economy have become increasingly complex for those countries that are interested in the environmental impact of economic activity. This study aims to analyze the process of energy transition in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe on the basis of the causality relationship among specific variables for the period 1990–2018. The study is based on cross-sectional panel data and the panel vector error correction model (PVECM). The efforts made by these countries by joining the European Union have generated economic development, with positive effects being recorded on the protection of the environment, a fact due to the strict regulations adopted and rigorous implementation at the national level. Foreign capital had a positive impact on the transition to a low carbon economy because most of the FDI flows attracted by the non-euro countries in the CEE come from Western Europe, i.e., from EU member countries, located either among the founders or among the countries that joined during the first waves of union expansion. Membership in the European Union facilitates the energy transition process for the non-euro countries of Central and Eastern Europe, but the new geopolitical events generate the reconfiguration of the European strategy of considering the need to ensure energy security.

Synchronization and bifurcation in an economic model
(2022-10-01) Camargo, Victor E.; Amaral, Amaury S.; Crepaldi, Antônio F. [UNESP]; Ferreira, Fernando F.; Universidade de São Paulo (USP); Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
We study the synchronization of two coupled idealized economies. In the present work, we consider a recently developed economic system that shows a richness of dynamical behavior. By means of the Lyapunov exponents, we analyze that there is overly complex behavior in the transitions in the dynamics of an isolated economy, oscillating between chaotic attractors and limit cycles. Then, for two coupled economies, we analyze the synchronization states for the space of all control parameters as a function of the network coupling parameter. Interestingly, we have evidenced that there is a broad region of fully synchronized states and as we increase the coupling, some phenomena such as a smooth and intermittent loss in synchronization emerge. In the same way, we observe phase synchronization for one of the control parameters. Ultimately, in order to confirm this loss of synchronization, we inspect the stability of synchronized states through the master stability function method for some control parameters. Here, we corroborate what was previously observed, the unexpected vast range of control parameter values of instability corresponding to desynchronization.

Sustainability in the Supply Chain: Analyzing the Role of the Focal Company and Training in the Implementation of SDGs
(2022-10-01) Teixeira, Talita Borges [UNESP]; Battistelle, Rosane A. G. [UNESP]; Teixeira, Adriano Alves [UNESP]; Bonacina, Camila Zanchettin [UNESP]; Vitoreli, Marinez Cristina [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP); Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS)
Understanding how training can contribute to employee awareness, development of skills, competencies, and knowledge of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in supply chains and the role of the focal company still remains unanswered. Thus, this article had the purpose of investigating the performance of a company in the Brazilian electricity sector in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the supply chain. A review of the literature on the SDGs and the importance of focal companies and training for their execution was carried out in order to theoretically support the study. Then, the case study technique was used to understand “how” and “which” training practices are being implemented in the supply chain to make the management of the SDGs more effective. The results indicate: (i) that the systematic application of training by the focal company is crucial for the implementation of SDGs in the supply chain, (ii) that the focal company plays an important role in leading the implementation of the SDGs in the supply chain, and (iii) that the partnerships between supply chain members are important and facilitate sustainable management in the supply chains. Additionally, we present a robust set of training practices conducted in the supply chain and the results achieved.

The Sustainable Development Goals Implementation: Case Study in a Pioneer Brazilian Municipality
(2022-10-01) Teixeira, Talita B. [UNESP]; Battistelle, Rosane A. G. [UNESP]; Teixeira, Adriano A. [UNESP]; Mariano, Enzo B. [UNESP]; Moraes, Tiago E. C. [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP); Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS)
Knowing how cities are planning, monitoring, and implementing the 2030 Agenda has been considered by the literature as crucial to the advancement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In this context, the main purpose of this article was to investigate the performance of the municipality of Birigui (São Paulo State, Brazil) in the implementation of the SDGs. To achieve the objectives proposed in this study, first a literature review was carried out on the subject of the SDGs and the importance of the counties for their effectiveness. Next, a case study was realized to understand “how” and “what” practices had been adopted by the county. The results confirm the importance that counties have, as well as the relevance of partnerships for the effective implementation of the SDGs. In addition, it presents the various practices adopted to leverage the SDGs in the county that may serve as an example for other counties in Brazil, in emerging countries and around the world, or for various types of sectors and organizations. Therefore, this work fills an important research gap in bringing to light a personalized study of how the SDGs have been planned, monitored, and implemented in a local government (city) in Brazil.

Assessing the EKC hypothesis by considering the supply chain disruption and greener energy: findings in the lens of sustainable development goals
(2023-02-01) Mohammed, Kamel Si; Tiwari, Sunil; Ferraz, Diogo [UNESP]; Shahzadi, Irum [UNESP]; University of Ain Temouchent; Central University of Kerala; Federal University of Ouro Preto (DEECO-UFOP); University of Hohenheim; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
This paper investigates the effect of the supply chain disruption, greener energy consumption, and economic growth on carbon emissions in advanced economies and emerging markets from 1997 to 2021 using panel quantile autoregressive distributed lags (QARDL) and the panel quantile regression (QR). The results of the two models confirm, on the one hand, the validity of the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis and, on the other hand, the role of renewable energy consumption in mitigating carbon emissions in advanced and developing economies. Furthermore, the finding shows that the supply chain disruption for the long run is positive at all quantiles, indicating the evidence of association at the extreme low and high quantiles than at the intermediate quantile. In addition, the effect of the supply chain decreases at the lower quantile. It turns negative at the upper 90th quantile in the short run, indicating that the supply chain disruption reduces the environmental degradation under the bearish market conditions. In the future, the increasing supply chain disruptions due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and further COVID-19 worldwide can consider sluggish economic growth and play an essential role in promoting renewable energy abundance and reducing CO2 emissions. Practical implications are reported in the lens of carbon neutrality and structural changes.

Best Environmental Practices in the Leather Sector: a framework for circular economy initiatives based on the views of specialists and researchers
(Soc Leather Technol Chemists, 2023-01-01) De Almeida, Ilton Marchi [UNESP]; Ribeiro Da Silva, Hermes Moretti [UNESP]; Jugend, Daniel [UNESP]; Pinheiro, Marco [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
The leather industry has socio-economic relevance for producing countries. However, the standard production model has been questioned in terms of environmental aspects. Through a systematic review of the literature, this paper proposed a framework of environmental best practices and circular economy initiatives, based on the evaluations of academic authors and specialists from companies in the sector. Four dimensions were considered as criteria for evaluating environmental practices: reliability, applicability, adherence and effectiveness. The results indicate a high level of agreement on best practices, confirming the potential for generating environmental benefits, with specialists attributing values of agreements higher than those presented by the authors of scientific articles. This supports the view that more sustainable production initiatives are viable, preserving the socioeconomic importance of the sector without harming the environment. The implications of this work cover the theories and practices addressed through the consultation with the two targeted participant groups. The commonality of processes and chemical use across countries can also be seen as a critical factor for advancing the frontiers of knowledge and implementing more sustainable production processes.

Measuring the effects of climate techs and social inequality on climate performance using a SEM-DEA approach
(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2022-09-29) Furlan, Marcelo [UNESP]; Mariano, Enzo Barberio [UNESP]; Aeronaut Inst Technol ITA; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
The objective of this study was to propose an index based on the IPAT model to quantify the performance of countries concerning their emissions, also taking into account the level of climate technology and the level of inequality. In this study, two quantitative techniques were applied to a sample of 100 countries and 21 indicators. The main results were: (a) a 1% increase in social inequality contributes to an increase in emissions levels by 0.105; (b) the 1% increase in climate techs contributes to reducing emissions levels by 0.141; (c) The proposed IPA index shows that only Estonia and Slovenia are the best performers, mainly in overcoming the inequality barrier, while South Africa and Nigeria are the worst performers in reducing their emissions. The results provide evidence that climate policies should contain social targets to improve country performance and should use a representative value to identify their effectiveness.

Contributions of the Circular Economy to the Leather Life Cycle: A Theoretical Review and Integrative Framework Proposal
(2021-11-01) De Almeida, Ilton Marchi [UNESP]; Jugend, Daniel [UNESP]; Deus, Rafael Mattos; De Souza, Fernando Bernardi [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP); Faculdades Integradas de Jahu (FIJ)
Due to its economic and environmental importance, the leather production chain has received much attention from researchers and intergovernmental organisations in recent years. However, the academic literature has not yet debated how the circular economy (CE) can contribute to the life cycle of leather. This work advances this theme through a systematic review and content analysis to identify and analyse the CE principles and initiatives that contribute to a reduction in the potential environmental impacts of the leather life cycle. Among its main contributions, this work discusses the environmental impacts of the leather production life cycle, presents potential relationships between the leather production phases and CE, and proposes an integrative framework for CE and the leather life cycle.

Circular product design maturity matrix: A guideline to evaluate new product development in light of the circular economy transition
(2022-09-10) Aguiar, Marina Fernandes [UNESP]; Jugend, Daniel [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
Many recent studies have highlighted the role of circular product design in the light of the transition to the circular economy. Nevertheless, the gradual incorporation of circular economy practices, methods, and tools still requires further investigation, mainly in terms of new product development, which is a key process for the adoption of the circular economy. The main innovation of this paper is its proposal of a maturity matrix for the gradual adoption of the circular economy in the new product development process. The development and proposition of this maturity matrix was based on a literature review, evaluation from experts, and application in four companies, from different industrial sectors. The matrix is composed of five maturity levels and eleven analysis dimensions, encompassing the circular economy-oriented design strategies. Among the main outcomes, the application of the matrix provides a diagnosis and broader understanding of how circular the new product development process in a company is. Moreover, the matrix can guide companies to gradually improve circular economy integration through the design of new products, contributing to the theoretical and managerial debate about the transformation processes involved in the transition from a linear to a circular economy.
