We intend, in this perspective, to develop an analysis of the space and its subtextual inter-relationships displayed in the symbolic implications of the water, the sea, the circle, and the feminine subjectivity awakening of the work's protagonist.Partindo-se do pressuposto teorico de que o texto de autoria feminina e um palimpsesto e, como tal, comporta signifi cados subtextuais que, em permanente interacao com o plano do texto, desarticulam os pressupostos opositores e hierarquicos do universo patriarcal, o presente trabalho pretende fazer uma breve incursao a instancia narrativa do espaco em O despertar, obra-prima de Kate Chopin - importante nome do Realismo estadunidense -, para demonstrar como tal instancia comporta em si e dissemina nos demais elementos narrativos inter-ditos de contestacao do patriarcado.
