Plants were harvested in five vertical layers above soil level (0-20, 20-40, 40-60, 60-80 and over 80 cm). The samples were divided in: green leaves, green stems and dry material. Generally, values of in vitro dry matter digestibility and the levels of crude protein of both cultivars were greater in the higher layers of the vegetation, with a decrease, however, for the other layers and more advanced phases of plants development, mainly with no N fertilization.O trabalho foi conduzido na FCAV-UNESP, Campus de Jaboticabal, com o objetivo de estudar os efeitos da presença ou ausencia de adubação nitrogenada (0 e 50 kg de N/ha/corte), de três crescimentos sucessivos (21.12.87, 25.01.88 e 29.02.88) e de três idades de corte (28, 35 e 42 dias), sobre a composição em proteína bruta e digestibilidade in vitro da matéria seca de duas cultivares de Panicum maximum Jacq. (colonião e tobiatã), cortando-se a vegetação em cinco estratos verticais (0-20; 20-40; 40-60; 60-80 e acima de 80 cm, em relação ao nível do solo). As amostras referentes aos diversos estratos foram separados em: folhas verdes, colmos verdes e material seco.
