Methods: Cross-sectional study with 279 students of both sex, who answered a questionnaire with demographic data, sleep habits and complaints, and family rules. Groups with more and fewer rules were compared regarding sleep characteristics through an analysis of variance of two-factor (age-group and family rules), and on the proportion of sleep complaints reports through chi-square test. Results: At least one family rule was reported by 93.5% of students, mainly associated with the time to come home, bedtime on school days, and meals time. Younger teenagers (11-14-years-old) slept earlier (p<0.05). Conclusion: The results suggest the role of family rules as a protective factor on sleep and point out the need to value parenting practices even for older adolescents.76-84porAdolescentFamilySleepRotina de sono em adolescentes e regras familiaresSleep routine in adolescents and family rulesArtigoAcesso restrito2-s2.0-85025700580
