Ao lado dessas mudanças, as quais objetivaram, sobretudo, dotar a capital do Império de um aspecto mais civilizado, presenciou-se uma investida deliberada por parte de determinada parcela da sociedade no sentido de preparar os habitantes para as novas demandas sócio-culturais. Esse trabalho tem por objeto as mutações por que passou a condição feminina no Rio de Janeiro do século XIX, sobretudo durante o Segundo Reinado, em meio ao processo de mudanças mencionado. Partindo do pressuposto de que a situação do sexo frágil está intimamente articulada ao processo de urbanização e europeização da capital do Império e, também, à investida em prol da instrução dos habitantes, procuramos analisar nesta pesquisa os papéis sociais atribuídos à mulher no novo cenário social que então se compunha na capital do Império. Para tanto, valemo-nos de textos médicos, literários e jornalísticos, textos que dão pistas de como a referida parcela da elite letrada brasileira percebia as mudanças urbanas, de como concebia a função da mulher na sociedade que se reestruturava e, sobretudo, de quais propósitos e argumentos partilhavamThrough the nineteen century, the Brazilian city, Rio de Janeiro, met a lot of change such as: the intensive process of urbanization and a growing acquirer of the European customs. Aside these events, each one of them got, above all, to endow to the Brazilian Empire a certain aspect of civilization, so it is noted a deliberated investing by certain part of the society, in order that, to prepare the inhabitant to these new changes the social agents involved on this investment: politicians, intellectuals, between others; the project that they intended: the diffusion of lights and consequently, a process of moralization of the individuals. This thesis has as it purposes the mutability of the female condition at the city of Rio de Janeiro, in the nineteen century, fundamentally during the reign of Dom Pedro II and during the social and cultural changes already described. Supposing that the situation of women has gradually being influenced by this new process thus it has being by the investing on the education of the inhabitants, overcoat, it is concentrated new socials roles imputed to women on this new Brazilian reality.
