Institutional repositories and knowledge organization: A bibliographic study from Library and Information Science
(2023-01-01) Fujita, Mariângela Spotti Lopes [UNESP]; Agustín-Lacruz, Carmen; Tolare, Jéssica Beatriz [UNESP]; Terra, Ana Lúcia; Bueno-De-La-Fuente, Gema; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP); University of Zaragoza; University of Coimbra
This research presents an exploratory and descriptive study on the use of knowledge organization processes and systems in the context of repositories, published in journals indexed in databases between 2015 and 2020. The authors of these papers do not necessarily publish in specific events and journals in the Knowledge Organization area, but rather in the Library and Information Science arena. The study has been carried out in four steps: 1. Search, retrieval and selection of articles; 2. Development of a data codebook; 3. Identification and codification of topics; and, 4. Analysis of the data extracted. A final sample of 33 articles was defined. The methodology applied to determine the theme of journal articles is presented in detail, including the use of the Classification System for Knowledge Organization Literature (CSKOL). The illustrative data of disciplinarity and interdisciplinarity present in the articles object of this study are shown and discussed, regarding the predominance of certain ranges of CSKOL and regarding the diversity of the representative themes of the contents. It is possible to conclude that the use of CSKOL proves to be a suitable lens for analysing and understanding the literature on the field of knowledge organization in institutional repositories. It is shown that, in these 33 articles the themes of knowledge organization are combined with interdisciplinary themes from other areas of knowledge. In our opinion, this enriches and improves theoretical support for research development.

Dialogues between sociocultural issues and knowledge organization systems
(2022-07-01) Moreira, Walter [UNESP]; Sabbag, Deise; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP); Universidade de São Paulo (USP)
The necessary ontological basis for knowledge organization systems (KOS) is structured on an epistemological basis and as is increasingly required in the context of critical knowledge organization studies, on a cultural basis. Thus, KOS must be discussed in terms of their social impacts, either directly or indirectly, visible, or not. The following questions are raised as general research problems: how to recognize and incorporate cultural diversity in KOS? How do recognize its applied dimension in the construction of documentary representations? KOS that are not inclusive fail in their fundamental purpose, which is the socialization of knowledge. The neglect of the cultural variables involved in the production and organization of knowledge makes the system oppressive or irrelevant, in both cases expendable. Thus, the objective is to understand the new requirements formulated for knowledge organization systems in accordance with the interests of the cultural perspective of knowledge organization. To do this, the construction of a critical-reflexive text based on the elements indicated by Hjørland and Pedersen (2005) and summarized in Hjørland (2008) as foundations for a classification theory is adopted as a methodological parameter. Thus, the ten principles listed by these authors are systematized into five dimensions of analysis related to the conception of the classificatory structure as a key component of KOS, they are: objectivity/subjectivity; ontological basis; sociocultural base; the domain as a guiding element; social effects of classification. It is concluded that the incorporation of cultural diversity into KOS requires attention to, at least, three elements that, although easily identifiable, prove to be extremely complex in their pragmatic aspect: a) the mapping and recognition of the different sociocultural perspectives through which a given concept can be observed; b) the incorporation of this diversity into the SOCs by making the classification structure that supports it more flexible; c) the explanation of the points of view adopted in the construction of the SOC.

Hybrid libraries and the development of society
(2022-09-01) da Silva, Rafaela Carolina [UNESP]; Caldas, Rosângela Formentini [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
Introduction: The distinctive and fundamental libraries' properties are changed over time, and some of these changes reflected in the nomenclature used to refer to the characteristics of the libraries. This is the case of the traditional and hybrid libraries. This research defends the thesis that hybridity paradigm for libraries stagnated in the 1990s, however, the library management changed, because of their communities' needs. Objective: It aimed to follow the sociocultural trajectory of the concept of hybrid library. Methodology: The study is qualitative, exploratory, and carried out a theoretical-epistemological and field research. It used the Multimodal Discourse Analysis as research method. The Bibliographic Research was used as a tool to collect data in specific and related Information Science databases. The Field Research was used as a tool to collect data in hybrid library environments placed in the State of Missouri, United States of America. Results: As partial results, was possible to identify that hybridity should be understood beyond its physical infrastructure, as a representative factor to develop communities. The concept of hybridity is inserted in the context of systemic organizations, presupposing an open environment action and administrative junctions, conjecturing micro and macro informational spaces. Conclusion: The hybridity promotes ways to use technology in favor of a collective intelligence, approaching knowledge networks, which can bring new perspectives to the libraries.

(2022-01-01) Novaes, Fernanda Carolina Pegoraro [UNESP]; Moreira, Walter [UNESP]; da Silva, Amanda Mendes [UNESP]; de Oliveira, Alessandra Nunes [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
The 60's and 70's were marked by protests against the cultural industry, with music traffic through MP3. To destroy online piracy, streaming platforms have emerged, offering “free” music. With this in mind, the general objective of the present research is to reflect on how the consumption of music interferes with its own representation. To this end, the following specif-ic objectives were established: a) to gather bibliog-raphy on the theme “free music”; b) investigate how information science can benefit people through the Internet of Things; c) highlight capitalism generated in the music market and the main points about streaming platforms and music sales. It is concluded that every technological performance of music is marked by the interest of the market (which has influenced and continues to influence cultural choices).

The indexing policy in the practices of Brazilian institutional repositories: A diagnostic study from the perception of managers and indexers
(2023-01-01) Fujita, Mariângela Spotti Lopes [UNESP]; Tartarotti, Roberta Cristina Dal’Evedove; Dal’Evedove, Paula Regina; Panuto, Jéssica Cristina [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP); Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP); Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar)
Institutional repositories aim to gather, treat and disseminate information resources produced in a given institution. The adoption of an indexing policy aims to improve information retrieval by the user community of the institutional repository, by proposing elements that standardize the practices of librarians who work in subject cataloging. The objective of the research is to analyze the perception of managers and indexers of Brazilian institutional repositories about the indexing policy for information organization and representation, with the specific objectives of performing a compared evaluation of elements and variables (characteristics, processes, and instruments) of the indexing policy regarding indexing and retrieval, discussion of vocabulary control procedures, and obtaining an overview focusing on the perception of the need for an indexing policy in Brazilian institutional repositories. Semi-structured interviews were applied to nine participants from eight institutional repositories to investigate the requirements, elements and variables of the indexing policy in the practice of managers and librarians of institutional repositories. The results reveal the need for improvements in the practices of the analyzed institutional repositories regarding the activities of subject cataloging, standardization of subject metadata, and vocabulary control, queries, and in carrying out tests or trials for continuous evaluation of indexing and information retrieval with users. The study also revealed that this scenario can be more positive if institutional repositories adopt an indexing policy for the practices they perform in repositories to be understood by managers and librarians as a tool to improve information retrieval. (2022-01-01) Ferreira, Thaís Guedes [UNESP]; Casarin, Helen de Castro Silva [UNESP]; de Almeida, Cátia Candida [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
The impact of school libraries on student learning has not been systematically verified due to the lack of adequate tools, particularly in the national context. This study aims to adequate the instrument used in the Student Learning through Ohio School Libraries research of the Center for International Scholarship in School Libraries to the Brazilian reality about its content, structure of the questions, the level of complexity and language. After adjustments and translation of the questionnaire into Portuguese, validated by three judges, it was applied to three classes of a Brazilian elementary school. We analyzed the responses regarding the purpose of the questions and checked the records observing the children´s attitude during the application. Based on the results, a new version of the questionnaire was elaborated and applied to classes of 4th and 5th year of elementary school. The results showed that most of the doubts and problems related to the questions in the first version of the questionnaire were resolved and it was adequate to the current Brazilian reality, especially concerning the content. Large-complementary studies can check his adequacy and the possible need for other adjustments.

Psychology journals guidelines on title, abstract and keywords
(2022-11-23) Terra, Ana Lúcia; Agustín-Lacruz, Carmen; Fujita, Mariângela Spotti Lopes [UNESP]; Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra (UC); Universidad de Zaragoza; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
The aim of this exploratory study on the wording of the title, abstract and keywords of the articles is to verify and analyze the author’s guidelines in scientific journals of Psychology. The method used a combination of quantitative and qualitative techniques applied in a representative sample of journals in the area of Psychology indexed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR), considering the first eight titles of each of the four quartiles. The sample consisted of 32 journals out of 77 (41.5%). A pre-adapted and tested spreadsheet was used. Data collection and processing was carried out on 38 items grouped into categories related to identification data, title guidelines, summary and keywords of the scientific article. The results reveal that the 32 magazine titles belong to 11 different publishers; all have some kind of style manual with guidelines that vary between complete and more superficial. Most have guidelines for drafting the title (75%, n. 24), abstract (96.8%, n. 31) and keywords (71.8% n. 23). The use of graphic and video abstracts are highlighted as new ways to disseminate the content of scientific articles. It is concluded that these aspects are aligned to a greater or lesser degree with the guidelines of the ISO standard and the APA manual. However, they are more related to the protocols of editorial management procedures for the dissemination of scientific work in a digital environment than to the intrinsic quality of documentary products associated with the organization and representation of Science.

The evolution of the concept of hybridity in library knowledge: a discursive analysis
(2023-01-01) Silva, Rafaela Carolina [UNESP]; Caldas, Rosângela Formentini [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
This study sought to deepen the conception of hybrid libraries as equipment that reflects the use of analog and digital tools, considering the cultural sphere as an integral and participatory factor in the development processes within society. The research is qualitative, descriptive and bibliographic. The Discourse Analysis method was applied to some of the hybrid library concepts raised in the literature during the bibliographic research. Within the institutional space in which the discourse bases its statements, the hybrid library concept is understood as the convergence of technology in the infrastructure of libraries. The right to speak of hybrid libraries began with information professionals and expanded to the communities that such institutions encompass. The discourses on hybrid libraries are intended to delimit the importance of the information professionals who create and maintain library services to the use of technologies, emphasizing training needs for librarians. It is concluded that hybridity must be understood as a model of internal and external library management, therefore, it can and must be applied to all types of libraries, so that these institutions can follow the structural advances of society and remain relevant to their communities.

James Duff Brown: A Librarian Committed to the Public Library and the Subject Classification
(2021-01-01) de Sales, Rodrigo; Martínez-ávila, Daniel; Guimarães, José Augusto Chaves [UNESP]; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC); Universidad Carlos III de Madrid; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
After two decades in the 21st Century, and despite all the advances in the area, some very important names from past centuries still do not have the recognition they deserve in the global history of library and information science and, specifically, of knowledge organization. Although acknowledged in British librarianship, the name of James Duff Brown (1862-1914) still does not have a proper recognition on a global scale. His contributions to a free and more democratic library had a prominent place in the works and projects he developed during his time at the libraries of Clerkenwell and Islington in London. Free access to the library shelves, an architecture centered on books and people, and classifications that are more dynamic were dreams fulfilled by Brown. With this biographical article, we hope to live up to his legacy and pay homage to a true librarian and an advocate of the public library and subject classification.

SOCIAL CURATION: COLLECTIVE PARTICIPATION IN THE CURATION OF DIGITAL-VIRTUAL MUSEUM ENVIRONMENTS
(2022-01-03) Jorente, Maria José Vicentini [UNESP]; Batista, Lucineia da Silva [UNESP]; Padua, Mariana Cantisani [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
Objective: The objective was to study a form of Digital Curation that contemplates social participation, that is, a curation model in which the community participates in its processes, and, consequently, feels represented, with a participatory, horizontal and inclusive approach. Methods: The methodology is descriptive and exploratory, with a literature review and research on web environments and initiatives that disclose the practice of social curation. Results: In the international context, some authors have addressed the social aspect of curation through the participatory approach. However, it was not possible to identify national authors who approach this perspective in the literature. The study observed that the Museu da Pessoa is pioneer in collaborative curation. International initiatives demonstrate the openness to participatory curation, transforming the community into cultural heritage curators. Conclusions: Netizens have become co-curators of cultural memories in digital-virtual environments, and the curation can now count on the participation of the community in the reconstruction of the narratives of cultural heritage in hybrid environments. Participatory approach promotes equity in the relationship between the institution and society, democratizing access to transcultural heritage and enabling Social Curation.

(2021-01-01) Báez, Estrellita Fornés; Puerta-Díaz, Mirelys [UNESP]; Falcón-Hidalgo, Banessa; Marti-Lahera, Yohannis; San Lázaro y L. Colina Universitaria; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP); Universidad de La Habana
In 2020, the Revista del Jardín Botánico Nacional celebrated its 40th anniversary. This study aims to stage an updated analysis of its publications to provide a general overview of the journal, focusing on a bibliometric analysis of its publications between 1980 and 2020. The methodology involves two procedures: 1) performance analysis to characterize the evolution of its productivity, visibility, and impact and 2) social network analysis for analysis of author co-occurrence maps. Also, some alternative indicators related to usage are considered in journal performance analysis of the last three years. The co-authorship structure exposed that the most productive and most cited authors were those who had more publications in co-authorship, with a greater diversity of co-authors and co-published with at least one author from a group other than their own. Main findings indicate that the Journal of National Botanic Garden has published transcendental works contributing to the construction of new scientific knowledge since its inception, and its quality as a scientific journal has been consolidated over time.

Information and Resistence in the era of the transparency society: the reconstruction of democratic ethos e as a space of freedom.
(2022-01-03) de Souza, Gabriel Scudeller; Sabbag, Deise Maria Antonio [UNESP]; Achilles, Daniele; Damásio Especialista em Filosofia e Teoria do Direito pela PUC/MG Advogado-Mediador Judicial; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP); certificado pelo CNPq.
Objective: proposes to think about the importance of resistance, based on human negativity and fallibility, present in the dialectic that builds the individual and allows his emancipation, to provide the reconstruction of politics through subjective and institutional practices. Methods: This article, carried out under the deductive method, based on consultations with bibliographic instruments, reviews and other scientific materials, Results: Society walks guided by information and communication, especially from new technologies and the dissemination and use of social networks, and the appropriation of these technologies and informational raw material by large companies, which dominate the world scene from analysis and data extraction, used for market segmentation and rendering. Homogenizing forces of social domination work cohesive to the interests of capital, which is neoliberalism in the contemporary world, state structures work to satisfy their interests. Conclusions: From this perspective, there is interference with human rights and the democratic system, as well as the consecration of a new power device, which translates into a neoliberal psychopolitics. The issue of freedom is discussed from the manipulation and social control exercised by the holders of psychopower, which, in the end, seeks to break with banal spaces and, ultimately, with the idea of resistance, everything from bet on technique raised to maximum power. Institutionalized informational spaces can offer elements for the experience and practice of resistance and freedom for the construction and formation of the democratic ethos, as information has the dynamo of crossing and drift that makes it possible to find new paths, new places, invention, knowledge, and recognition.

ANALYSIS OF THE CIDOC-CRM CONCEPTUAL MODEL FROM THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF DESCRIPTIVE CATALOGING IN MUSEUMS
(Univ Murcia, 2023-01-01) Reis, Mateus da Silva [UNESP]; Castro, Fabiano Ferreira de; Fujita, Mariangela Spotti Lo pes [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP); Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar)
Conceptual models are intended to describe and organize concepts from a given domain in order to establish semantic bridges between various information resources in different contexts. In this perspective, the Conceptual Reference Model (CRM), formulated by the International Committee for Documentation (CIDOC), presents itself as a conceptual reference model for museum institutions and collections, aiming to integrate, represent, and relate museum objects to various cultural sources by means of entities and properties. Even though it is focused on the museum reality, this study starts from the problem of investigating whether the CIDOC-CRM conceptual model is in line with the statements and principles that define concepts, research tools, and steps of descriptive cataloging in museums. With this, we aimed to analyze the CIDOC-CRM conceptual model from the formulation of basic principles of descriptive cataloging in museums, seeking to discuss its effective use in the context of semantic relationships among museum collections. This is a descriptive and bibliographic study, and its methodological approach is based on bibliographic review and direct observation. As a result, it was noted that the model performs its semantic relations based on values related to the sphere of meaning and symbolism, pluralizing the existence of the museum object in different environments, and focusing on the improvement of international museum information networks. In conclusion, the results obtained made it possible to evidence that CIDOC-CRM is an excellent alternative for the registration of data and for their association in the informational panorama of collections.

Thesis and dissertation subject metadata in repositories: an exploratory study on vocabulary control
(Univ Federal Rio Grande Sul, Fac Biblioteconomia & Comunicacao, 2022-10-01) Lopes Fujita, Mariangela Spotti [UNESP]; Barros Ribas, Rosane Rodrigues de [UNESP]; Scarpino Rodrigues, Milena Maria [UNESP]; Dias Silveira, Telma Jaqueline [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
The metadata of theses and dissertations are inserted in the repositories automatically or manually, in Dublin Core format, different from the one used by the libraries, generating duplicity of work. The objective is to compare the procedures of thematic treatment of theses and dissertations existing in the online catalogue and in the repository, through the analysis of subject metadata. An exploratory study was carried out with a case study on the use of vocabulary control in theses and dissertations metadata, with the institutional repository of sao Paulo State University and the Athena online catalog of the same institution. The exploratory study had two stages: documentary study of the historical trajectory of treatment of theses and dissertations at university and analysis of procedures of thematic treatment of theses and dissertations in databases, by authors and catalogers. The analysis of thematic treatment procedures employed observation of functioning and of routines and patterns, for evaluation of vocabulary control in the analysis of subject metadata. The results obtained revealed that the vocabulary control is not done in the search interfaces for information retrieval and neither in the alphabetical list of keywords, which means lack of guidance to authors, regarding the assignment of descriptors. The analyses showed two thematic treatments, which results in different subject representations, in natural language, in the repository, and in controlled language, in the catalogue. Two proposals were elaborated for the thematic treatment in subject metadata of theses and dissertations in repositories and library catalogues. It is concluded that the proposals may be assisted by the elaboration of an indexing policy of the repository that foresees the sharing of data resulting from self-archiving of theses and dissertations with the catalogue and that can accept the attribution of controlled vocabulary descriptors, besides the attribution of keywords.
