The major contributor to the success in restorative treatments are adhesive systems, currently a technique that has gained much attention are those that makes use of self-etching systems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the bond strength of different 2 - step self - etching adhesive systems, with different acidity levels, compared to previous treatment with new dentifrice formulations, in normal and artificially hypermineralized dentin substrates. One hundred and twenty eight healthy bovine inferior incisor teeth were selected and randomly divided into 2 categories according to the type of dentin: normal (N = 64) and hypermineralized (N = 64). The teeth had their vestibular surface worn to expose a flat dentin surface and sanded to expose a uniform and standardized dentin surface. The teeth were randomly divided into two different groups, according to the type of self-etching adhesive system used: Clearfil SE Bond (group C) (n = 32) and AdheSE (group A) (n = 32). They were randomly divided into four subgroups, according to the type of dentifrice applied or the absence of dentifrice. The subgroups are: (1) Conventional conditioning - application of the self-etching adhesive system according to the manufacturer's recommendations (n1 = 8); (2) Brushing the dentine surface with Colgate Pro-Relief (Pro-Argin®, Palmolive) + application of self-etching according to the manufacturer's recommendations (n2 = 8); (3) Brushing the dentin surface with Biorepair (Dr.Kurt Wolff, Bielefeld, Germany) + application of self-etching adhesive system according to the manufacturer's recommendations (n3 = 8); (4) Brushing the dentin surface with Regenerate Enamel Science (Unilever) + application of selfetching adhesive system according to the manufacturer's recommendations (n4 = 8). Transparent cylindrical matrices were positioned on each dentin surface treated with the adhesives tested, filled with composite resin (FiltekTM Z350 XT - 3M ESPE) and photoactivated for 20s. After a 24-hour storage period in a humid environment at 37o C, the specimens were adapted to a device for micro-shear bond strength in a mechanical testing machine. Then, the fracture pattern of each specimen was determined. The differences between the groups were determined using Two-Way ANOVA and Tukey, with significant level of 5%. The values of microcrystalline bond strength (MPa) in normal dentin for Clearfil SE Bond were: 1.Control: 173.45 ± 103.22; 2.Colgate: 195.33 ± 51.66; 3.Biorepair: 208.10 ± 126.53; 4.Regenerate: 203.33 ± 88.12; And for the AdheSE were: 1.Control: 122.98 ± 53.49; 2.Colgate: 65.70 ± 35.66; 3.Biorepair: 108.35 ± 76.08; 4.Regenerate: 72.96 ± 35.56. And in hypermineralized dentin the values for Clearfil SE Bond were: 1.Control: 171.68 ± 66.15; 2.Colgate: 179.44 ± 107.98; 3.Biorepair: 145.12 ± 53.14; 4.Regenerate: 202.00 ± 79.75; And for AdheSE were: 1.Control: 73.49 ± 62.51; 2.Colgate: 58.33 ± 31.95; 3.Biorepair: 78.85 ± 40.49; 4.Regenerate: 72.01 ± 43.49. Predominantly adhesive fractures were observed. When analyzing the adhesive, dentin and interaction factors, a significant difference was found only for the adhesive (p <0.0001), concluding that the resistance to micro-shear is dependent on the adhesive factor, but not on the type of dentin or previous treatment. Based on the results obtained it can be concluded that the application of desensitizer in association with a compatible adhesive system can be used when trying to control hypersensitivity without interference in the adhesive resistance.
