Literacy teaching is a complex task, involving knowledge about the student, his/her development and learning; on the teaching subject: writing; and also on the most appropriate teaching procedures, since the school’s day-to-day is marked by singularities. Our research had as study matter the teaching knowledge put into practice by literacy teachers from four schools of an educational network, two of which obtained the highest score and two with the lowest score in the 2014 National Literacy Assessment. By looking in a thorough way to the practices of the literacy teacher, we sought to identify and understand the factors that contribute to the diversity of performances of students in the literacy cycle, relating them to the manifest teaching knowledge in the school context. Given the complexity of the subject that represents the teaching knowledge in literacy, we sought to situate the study in relation to the conceptions of written language and the literacy process through the contributions of Bakhtin (2006), Klein (1986; 2004; 2012), Vygotsky (1989; 2001), Morais (2005; 2012) and Micotti (2004; 2009; 2012). Based on this understanding, we approached the central theme of the research, referring to teaching knowledge, using the theoretical contribution presented by the perspective of Sociology of the Professions, mainly through the studies carried out by Tardif (2002; 2013; 2014) and Gauthier (2013; 2015). Then, we conducted an empirical study with a qualitative-descriptive methodology, contrasting the discourse and practice of the teachers of these two groups of schools and the school context. The data were collected through the observation of classes and interviews with teachers of the Literacy Cycle; besides interviews with directors, pedagogical coordinators and documentary analysis of the political-pedagogical project of the surveyed schools. The organization and analysis of the data were structured from three categories: pedagogical practices; the teachers' discourse; and the school context in which the teaching practice occurs. The results indicated differences between schools with higher (Group 1) and lower (Group 2) performances the in 2014 National Literacy Assessment, even with similar realities in relation to the socioeconomic conditions of the students and the level of school management complexity. Group 1 schools presented philosophical conceptions and pedagogical guidelines that reverberate a greater emphasis on the teaching process and pedagogical referrals that favor student participation in the teaching-learning process. A greater progression of contents was also identified among the years of schooling of the Literacy Cycle in this group. The data showed that the teaching knowledge does not occur unrelated to the context in which it is inserted and that the school space interferes in its constitution. The data also pointed to the relevance of awareness about the role of teachers in not limiting themselves to the socioeconomic conditions of the students, but to commit themselves to the learning of all.
