The doctoral thesis herein aims to rebuild the memory of the working class of the factory Fábrica Carmen de Fiação e Tecelagem in Fernão Velho, located at Mundaú pond bank, in the outskirt of Maceió, capital of Alagoas. Although it focuses on the period of its apogee, which is from the beginning of 1950 to 1962, it does not ignore the preambles of its improvement, which started in 1857 when it was set up, as well as the consequence of its decline for the working class, which started in 1980. In this period, Othon Bezerro de Mello group owned the fabric. This group was one of the biggest brazilian business group in the first half of the 20th century. In view of the closeness between the researcher-member and the studied group, the oral history and the working class memory are invoked as a method of research, using Marx theorical base, supported by Walter Benjamin, E. P. Thompson, Simone Weil and Lucien Goldmann. The sources of investigation from the past are, therefore, the reports of workers who worked in the fabric during the years of 1940, 1950 and 1960, as well as state-wide journals, photographs, movies, reports and the minutes of trade union meetings. When the past is analyzed, it is possible to understand the intense political and social articulation of this working class, as well as its cultural manifestations, understanding them as representations of the formation of modernity in Alagoas. The women's role towards the social struggle also attracted our attention during the research. Finally, it was possible to observe that the fabric dismantle process brought serious social consequences to the survivors of this legacy, as the generations tend to disconect from the past of workers and suffer a process of disarticulation of memory inside the group, leading to uprooting and decline of the class idendity.
