The Amazon Biome, as all the other biomes within the administrative limits of the so-called Legal Amazon, has a worldwide importance due to its abundance of resources and diversity. Furthermore, it plays an essential function as a reactor that helps the environmental equilibrium. However, since the seventies, with the enforcement of occupation and “development” policies in the region, deforestation processes and other diverse impacts on the environment have been worryingly and significantly increasing from a socioenvironmental perspective. Thus, the current research done in the Microregion of Gurupi, located in the Maranhão Legal Amazon in the northwest of the state, is supported by the necessity of proceeding to a deep study on the changes of land use and cover that took place in the Maranhão Amazon from 1976 to 2016, analysing in a general manner the role of the social agents and public policies in the changes of land use and cover. To achieve such goal, the geosystemic approach has been used with the methodological GTP - Geosystem (geocomplex), Territory and Landscape guideline, associated to Geoprocessing techniques, analysed on a GIS environment. Therefore, it is possible to analyse the most significant changes that have positively and negatively influenced the families that used to live in this area. As results from this research, it was possible to identify through the classification of satellite images and field work, that the central and northern regions were the ones that lost most primary vegetation in favour of bare land and ground vegetation, normally used for agriculture and cattle raising, that along mangrove forests are the most fragile environments to erosive processes. Another important point was the perception of the changes by the residents of the areas and how they recognise and identify themselves with the environment where they live in. Besides that, this research has shown how it is possible to study an area from how it was occupied to the problems that currently affect it through the Geophotography, that worked not only as art, but also as a perception tool. Thus, it is understood that the theoretical model used along the Geotechnological tools was able to identify the main changes that took place on the area and how the population behaves before those. It is important to stress that, even though this research is a PhD thesis, its aim is to be continued, once the area requires several related studies to its social and environmental problems.
