JUNIUS VILLENEUVE AND THE CIRCULATION OF FRENCH EDITING STRATEGIES IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY BRAZIL: SERIAL-NOVELS AND THE MUSEO UNIVERSAL

Resumo

During part of the nineteenth century, notably in the decade of 1840, Junius Villeneuve established himself like the greatest printer of Rio de Janeiro, besides being in front of the most important daily newspaper of the period, Jornal do Commercio. Whether through the printing press of his typography or in the pages of his newspaper, the publisher and businessman contributed to the circulation of ideas, publishing modes, authors and French texts. This article explores the activity of printing and publishing carried out by Villeneuve in front of the typography of Jornal do Commercio, and this agent is used of strategies of edition proper to the French press. One of them was the maximum utilization of the literary publications, being the serial-novel (that fed the footer of the newspapers) reprinted in book; another, was the creation of a weekly periodical, to be collected in yearbook, the Museo Universal, ambitious illustrated magazine of varieties, which circulated for seven years. Through these examples, we will highlight the work of this Frenchman in front of the most important printing workshop of the corte (the typography of Jornal do Commercio), by having that Brazilian production participated of the centrality that France exercised in the nineteenth century in the world republic of letters.
