Family farming being a category characterized by the relations between land, work and family, each member is responsible for acting in a set of activities within the property, the woman plays a substantial role for the biological and socioeconomic subsistence of families. However, despite their significant role in family farming, they suffer from a lack of appreciation and underestimation. The structural changes in agriculture, which occurred in the 1960s, led small producers to seek new alternatives to access income through pluriactivity. The combination of agricultural and non-agricultural activities gave space to rural tourism, being seen as an activity capable of contributing to the expansion of work, especially for women, making them obtain economic income and enabling their social valorization. In this perspective, the objective of this research was to understand the role of family farmers in pluriactivity. For that, it appropriated the qualitative approach, of exploratory character, in which the chosen method of investigation was the case study. Data analysis was carried out through content analysis, supported by the relationship between the data obtained in the semi-structured interview, in the systematic observation and in the theoretical foundation. The results allowed us to conclude that female farmers have a fundamental role in pluriactivity, acting in the productive spheres, in agricultural and non-agricultural and reproductive activities. The extensive workload performed, influences the lack of time to develop other activities, whether for personal projects, entertainment and training. Agricultural productive activities are carried out together with husbands and / or fathers, while non-agricultural and reproductive activities are carried out almost exclusively by women. Decision-making was not accompanied by the collectivity in agricultural work, being the responsibility of men alone to decide on the production, marketing and administration of financial resources. Even though the women farmers are satisfied with the current division of labor and feel valued on the properties, it was possible to confirm the still present gender inequality that plagues the lives of rural women. Finally, the study corroborated to demonstrate that even living in situations of social vulnerability, resulting from gender asymmetry, women are rural protagonists and are essential for the maintenance of properties and their families.
