Introduction: Obesity presents itself as a public health problem, at the same time, as a social construction, which mixes the meanings and values attributed to social standards, which point to the objectification of the female body. In Brazil, and worldwide, 80% of individuals undergoing bariatric surgery are women. Given these facts, the need to promote care for the preparation of bariatric surgery related to gender perspectives emerges. Thus, the guiding question of the study is “What are the meanings that women on the verge of bariatric surgery attribute to obesity, the excess body, the perspective of weight loss and the social standards of beauty?” Method: From secondary data, composed by the audiovisual recording of a group of women who underwent an outpatient follow-up for six months in the preparatory phase for bariatric surgery, the content analysis technique was applied with a theoretical framework from the human and social sciences applied to health field. Results and discussion: This group of women revealed a relationship between how they experienced the construction of their gender with their bodies. They sought through bariatric surgery to adapt to socially imposed standards, through the release of fat, which is attributed the reason for their comorbidities and unhappiness. Conclusion: The expectations that this group of women have for life after surgery are structured by the desire to correspond to a series of social and aesthetic requirements that permeate the lives of women and hinder their development as a subject. These same requirements corroborate to the objectification of the female body. Therefore, this study points out that for women, the preparatory care for surgery that takes into account the gender perspective represents a tool for reflecting on such desires, and can contribute to the development of autonomy and more credible expectations regarding the results provided by the bariatric surgery.
