In “A nova narrativa” Antonio Candido discusses some of the tendencies in the Brazilian contemporary prose, making some points about what he called fierce realism. The goal of this work follows Candido’s premise of how the choice of point of view may or may not increase the representation of violence in this kind of realism. A first person narrative, according to the literary critic, creates a representation of said reality in a more concrete way, whereas a third person narrator represents it in a more exotic manner. However, in an attempt to correct a notion that might not be accurate, Candido questions whether the exotism created will not be “a special kind” which should be clearer for future readers. That being said, the present study seeks to show if this difference remains, and if it supports itself in contemporary fiction; and, if so, explain why the choice of a first person narrator acts in a concrete manner in the so-called fierce realism, instead of the choice of a third person narrator. Realism, according to Tânia Pellegrini (2018), works as an “imitation of depth”, and, in its structure, there is a social and cultural premise capable of representing the most diverse relationships between a person and the society they have been inserted in, regardless of their historical moment, since it is seen as a “historically transformative” aesthetic. Karl Erik Schollhammer (2009), contrasting from Ian Watt (2010)’s formal realism, argues that the contemporary realism does not bear the need to seek “descriptive verisimilitude and narrative objectivity”. Therefore, the concept would undergo a shift in the search for a “reality effect” through narratives that build themselves upon the relationships between literature and other means, often using other kinds of art as a gateway to represent their narrators or the victims of violence. This way, the collection Famílias terrivelmente felizes, published in 2003, and which contains twenty years of productions from Marçal Aquino, makes for a fundamental piece of work to know the author, since the reader will be faced with sixteen short stories published in previous collections, and four new narratives, as well as a transfer of his writing, giving it new meaning and creating a new reading experience of its fulcrum theme: violence. Thus, based on Candido’s investigation, this study intends to analyse the use of the third person narrator in the four narratives chosen as corpus – “Noturno nº um”, “Santa Lúcia”, “Boi”, e “A face esquerda” – and how violence is represented by the author, and, with that, problematize the role of the narrator’s creation in parts of the Brazilian contemporary fiction, which may or may not raise the question of urban violence.
