Resumo
Esta pesquisa se propõe a analisar os romances Beloved (1987), de Toni Morrison, e The Invention of Wings (2014), de Sue Monk Kidd de modo a relacionar as narrativas literária e histórica presentes nas obras, utilizando o conceito de metaficção historiográfica desenvolvido por Linda Huctheon (1991). Ambos os romances mesclam a narrativa literária com fatos históricos, de modo a criar um universo capaz de contar uma história diferente daquela oficialmente considerada verdadeira. Tanto em Beloved como em The Invention of Wings, as mulheres são protagonistas e trazem uma perspectiva única em relação ao momento histórico comum, também, aos dois livros: a escravidão nos Estados Unidos do século XIX. Além disso, essa pesquisa utiliza o conceito de Literatura de Reparação, de Anne Blessing (2015), para examinar a representação das personagens brancas e negras na literatura estadunidense, de modo a mostrar se houve – ou não – um rompimento com padrões e estereótipos relacionados a como essas mulheres aparecem no texto literário. Para tratar das questões relacionadas à opressão das mulheres na história, as teóricas Angela Davis (2016) e bell hooks (2019) são utilizadas, assim como Toni Morrison (1992) e sua obra teórica para a abordagem da representação da população negra na literatura.
This study analyzes the novels Beloved (1987), by Toni Morrison, and The Invention of Wings (2014), by Sue Monk Kidd, relating the literary and historical narratives presented in the books based on the notion of Historiographical Metafiction, coined by Linda Hutcheon (1991). Both novels merge the literary narrative with historical facts to create a universe which tells a different history from the one officially considered true. In Beloved and in The Invention of Wings women are protagonists and bring a unique perspective of the common historical moment presented in both novels: American slavery in the 19th century. Furthermore, this thesis uses the concept of Reparational Literature, by Anne Blessing (2015), to examine the representation of black and white characters in American literature, aiming to understand if there was – or was not – a rupture in patterns and stereotypes related to how these women were presented in the literary text. To deal with the oppression of women in history, texts by Angela Davis (2015) and bell hooks (2019) are used, and Toni Morrison’s theorical work (1992) is employed to discuss issues concerning black people in literature.
