It is assumed that the environment, as well as the resources of nature, were in a certain balance when it comes to the conservation of forests, rivers and soils. However, the logic of demographic, and later, economic occupation of the portion of the territory that we now know as Oeste Paulista, caused pressure on these resources, modifying land use, altering the natural dynamics and transforming the landscapes. As a result, the natural landscape gave way to new faces, the vast heterogeneous forest vegetation ceased to exist. These spaces were occupied by anthropic cultures that directly interfered in the water cycle, given that a significant part of the precipitation does not infiltrate these new surface conditions, resulting in runoff and erosive features. In this sense, this research aims to investigate the historical processes that led to the demographic and economic occupation of that portion of the territory. They also propose to understand how economic occupation, through agricultural and livestock development, produced new landscapes, moved the agricultural frontier, altered the natural logic and degraded soils to the point that the region was recognized as one of the areas with the most erosive conditions in the state of São Paulo. To this end, a bibliographic survey of Oeste Paulista and the processes that formed it up to the current configuration was carried out. A bibliographic survey was also carried out regarding the main economic activities practiced in that portion of the territory that contributed to the transformation in land use and coverage and, consequently, in the alteration of the landscape. The main geophysical characteristics were investigated and the main changes in land use and land cover in the municipality of Caiabu were evaluated and, finally, morphological and physical examinations of the soils of the São José site were carried out in order to characterize them. The results show that the landscape underwent historical transformations, especially with the arrival of the miners and later on with the implantation of coffee production, altering the natural logic and modifying the landscape of Western São Paulo. The economic cycles developed since the 20th century further deepened the transformations in the landscape and accelerated processes of soil erosion. Until the end of the twentieth century, it was noted that in the municipality of Caiabu, anthropic pasture linked to the production of meat and milk dominated the landscape of the municipality, however, in the first decade of the following century, through incentive policies at the national level , there was a major change in the use and coverage of these lands. The soils collected at the São José site and analyzed in the field and in the laboratory reveal a natural propensity to erosive events, in view of the textural horizons presented in the subsurface.
