The state of São Paulo, and in particular, the Pontal do Paranapanema, are considered major producers of sugarcane. The expansion of the sugarcane sector and the growing search for high productivity has led to an increase in the use of agrochemicals in sugarcane plantations. The intensive use of these micropollutants raises concerns regarding the contamination of water bodies due to their toxicity to the environment and human health. The so-called persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are highly stable chemical compounds that are resistant to degradation and may remain in the environment for long periods. Among the existing POPs is the herbicide diuron, used in pre- and post-emergence of weeds as an inhibitor of photosynthesis in sugar cane crops. The permanence of these micropollutants in natural waters depends on biotic and abiotic processes, where the abiotic factor presents the main way of removing these contaminants. The abiotic transformations include photochemical reactions that occur through direct and indirect photolysis. In direct photolysis, the pollutant is degraded by absorption of sunlight and its degradation rate depends on its quantum yield and absorption of photons. In indirect photolysis, the reaction occurs between the pollutant with reactive intermediary species (RIs) such as singlete oxygen (1O2), triplet state of dissolved chromophore organic matter (3CDOM*) and hydroxyl radical (•OH). Knowing the environmental fate of these contaminants is of utmost importance to assess the environmental impacts caused by them. It is scarce in the literature works dedicated to the degradation and permanence of these pollutants in hydric bodies. Therefore, based on mathematical simulations, experimental results and literature data, the present work investigated the environmental fate of the diuron herbicide in the Paraná River, as a result of photochemical reactions. The results of the simulations carried out with the aid of the APEX software showed that the depth of the water column was the variable that most influenced the persistence of the herbicide in the studied river. The half-life in a depth of 5 meters can reach approximately 41 days. The concentrations of the IRs in different seasons of the year were determined, where they ranged from 2.73×10-15 mol L-1 to 4.1×10-15 mol L-1 for singlete oxygen, 2.73×10-15 mol L-1 to 4.1×10-15 mol L-1 for organic matter triplets and 2.37×10-17 to 3.73×10-17 mol L-1 for hydroxyl radicals.
