The Osamu Utsumi Mine is located within the geological context of the Poços de Caldas Alkaline Massif in the southwestern portion of the state of Minas Gerais. It is currently in the process of decommissioning and faces problems related to the presence of water resurgence in the rock massif environment under which it is a tailings dam. However, it does not know the provenance of this hydrogeological flow, which can originate either from a natural groundwater system in the region or from the tailings reservoir located upstream. In order to characterize this hydrogeological flow, a structural analysis was performed through 200 measurements on the outcrop of the rock mass, aiming to identify an attitude of the major families of fractures that occur, as well as identification of regional structures through Spring software. The outcrop structural survey revealed two major families of NW-SE preferred direction fractures and variations in dive angles, and the survey of regional structures around the mine also revealed a preferred NW-SE and NE-SW direction, but with predominance of the first direction. An electroresistivity data acquisition was also performed on the tailings dam, with the lines perpendicular to the outcrop. This geophysical method revealed zones of low resistivity corresponding to the presence of hydrogeological flows, both in the lateral parts of the profiles (in the boundaries between the dam and the crystal basement) and in the portions below the dam, at rocky substrate. The correlation of the structural and geophysical data allowed the identification of the origin of the hydrogeological flows that form the water resurgence. These are caused by the pressure that the water slide, trapped in the tailing’s reservoir, exerts on the water in contact with the rocky substrate. This relationship favors the injection of water from the reservoir into rock mass fractures, and these fractures are interconnected, forming a kind of path to groundwater, which carries the fluids below the dam to its extravasation in the downstream outcrop from the dam.
