Unconventional food plants (PANCs) are a group of plants that are present in the diet of many people but are not produced on a large scale and are therefore less well known. One of these plants is Pereskia aculeata Mill., Known as Ora pro nobis, which has edible flowers, leaves, stems and roots. It is a native species of the Brazilian flora, occurring in the Northeast, Midwest, Southeast and South regions. It has a high content of carbohydrates, high levels of minerals, vitamin A and C, folic acid and proteins. Therefore, it has great potential for human consumption. The objective of this project was to characterize local accessions of Pereskia aculeata Mill. through the analysis of bioactive compounds and antioxidant potential in extracts obtained from leaves, stems, fruits, flowers and roots. The determination of the antioxidant activity by the DPPH test showed activity for all extracts, mainly for the hydroethanolic leaf extract. In the determination of total flavonoids the leaf extracts obtained higher content than the stem extracts, and in the determination of total phenols, both extracts presented high content in their concentrations. It can be concluded that Ora pro nobis has great potential to be further explored in human nutrition.
