The present thesis aims to an interpretation of the novel “Theme of the Traitor and the Hero”, from the book Fictions (1944) by the argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges, in order to extract a parallel between the story told about an individual who fares in search of his ancestor’s biography – the hero so acclaimed and immortalized -, and the subtle, almost silent story of its translation, in the light of the reading, of a new reading or of the literary memory. Thus, the novel inserts in the same body of essay not only the immortalized memory of the unquestionable (hence unshakeable) hero, but in the meantime, the memory that becomes immortal since it is refused as revisited, akin to the reader or translator which, in front of a certain work, transmits it under the contextual aspects of its sight. Consequently, it through a creative recreation that seeks establish a factor blunt to the memory which eternalizes itself in the time of renovation, and therefore will not be faithful to the inspirational convention, but “loyal” to the tone of a reception suitable to new forms of the senses. Thus, in a manner illustrative of the double crossing of immortality, now, by the irrefutable, as in the case of the glorified hero who was actually a traitor, a clear moment in Borges’ intertextuality, now, by investigating, as in the case of Ryan and the rumors about the depredation of his great-grandfather’s Fergus Kilpatrick grave, and in so doing, the great metaphor of translation can be inferred as Bernardo Bertolucci did, in the meanders of intersemiotic translation, the recreation of Borges’ novel under the title The Spider’s Strategy (1970). By descontructing the solidity of absolute sense in search of the constant renovation simbolized in the moment of the reading, we seek the parallel between Ryan in the tale and Bertolucci as translator in the movie, to make the thesis by which Borges’ tale tells about aspects of translation such as eternity concrete, as well as what regards the “truth” acclaimed in the figure of the hero, enhancing the story of the novel, as well as the translation refused in the figure of Bertolucci’s Ryan, in summary, of a translator-reader-spectator of the second, concealed story: that of the translations of the theme of the traitor and the hero.
