REPERCUSSÕES DA RETÓRICA CLÁSSICA EM A NOVA GERAÇÃO, DE MACHADO DE ASSIS
(Universidade de São Paulo - Faculdade de Filosofia, Letras e Ciências Humanas, 2023-03-27) Azevedo, Sílvia Maria [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
The aim of this article is to propose a yet underexplored reading of the article A nova geração, by Machado de Assis, from the perspective of style, a recurrent notion in the rhetoric and poetics manuals of nineteenth-century Brazil, through which the critic analyzes the work of poets in tune with the most diverse aesthetic-literary tendencies, from the late romantics, the realists-naturalists, the socialists, to the supporters of the so-called scientific poetry.

City, vampires and identity: a reading of The night doesn't Let me sleep: by Camila Fernandes
(Editora Univ Pontificia Univ Catolica Rio Grande Sul-edipucrs, 2021-05-01) Pereira, Marcio Roberto [UNESP]; Vicente Carneiro, Ana Paula [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
In a sociological reading of The night does not Let me sleep (2018), we will explore the ambiguity present in the tale that, just as Piglia (2004) points out as a striking feature of the genre, narrates two stories by merging the real with the fantastic, ranging from a Lover frustrated by abandonment to the bearer of a mysterious curse. To analyze the verbal game, as observed by Bosi (1974), present in the narrative that updates the vampire archetype according to the permutability of the theme (HUMPHREYS, 2018), we will resort to the vision of Hall (1992), on the fragmentation of the identity of the post-subjectand Bauman (2004), in reference to the troubled sexual relationships present in the narrative, besides Auge (1994) and Benjamin (1987), in the discussions about the spaces and their representation in the autodiegetic conflicts narrated in the tale.

Juo Bananere, an Italian Brazilian writer
(Editora Univ Pontificia Univ Catolica Rio Grande Sul-edipucrs, 2021-01-01) Antunes, Benedito [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)
This paper was carried out to analyze the language of Juo Bananere, pseudonym used by Alexandre Ribeiro Marcondes Machado (1892-1933), trying to understand his literary and historical implications within Brazilian context at the beginning of the 20th century. Based on the Italian immigrant's jargon which mixed Portuguese with Italian, the writer created a comic representation of that immigrant, who faced difficulties in order to adapt himself to Brazilian society. In that creation one points out the broken style through which several issues concerning the social, political, historical and cultural order were broached, notably the Literary one. One proposes here to analyze specifically Juo Bananere's writer face, who said he was himself a poet, barber and journalist, in order to observe the way the character represents, more than the Italian immigrant's situation, the status of Brazil as a colonized country facing the contradictions resulted from such a process.

INTELLECTUAL CONFIGURATION IN THE NOVEL S. BERNARDO
(Assoc Nac Pos-graduacao Pesquisa Letras & Linguistica, 2020-09-01) Antunes, Benedito [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp)
This paper tries to characterize the narrator's voice in the novel S. Bernardo by Graciliano Ramos, as a critical conscience which accompanies and evaluates fictional facts, presenting himself as an intellectual. Either in a direct way, as a narrator or character, or in the various forms of focalization, that figure is found out in all great literature and tends to create an instance which reflects on the subject of the narration, aiming at discussing historical, social, political issues broached in the novel. His exam opens perspectives for understanding the represented sociopolitical context and the way of learning the topics broached by the author. In Brazil, the presence of the intellectual may be observed in classic writers' works such as Machado de Assis, Lima Barreto, Mario de Andrade, Graciliano Ramos, Cyro dos Anjos, but his configuration takes on a particular interest in novels which express yearnings for social and political changes, like the ones published in the 1930s.

Os simples by Guerra Junqueiro and the Brazilian press
(Univ Estado Rio Janeiro, 2020-07-01) Simoes Junior, Alvaro Santos [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp)
From 1890 to 1893, it took place in Portugal an intense literary movement as a result of assimilation of decadent-symbolist ideas emanating from France. In this period, sixteen works with innovative trends were published. In Rio de Janeiro, the press followed with little interest news and controversies motivated by publications and attitudes taken by Eugenio de Castro, Alberto de Oliveira, Antonio Nobre among other young writers. However, the decadent-symbolist work that most had aroused interest of Rio newspapers and magazines was Os simples, lyrical poetry published by veteran Guerra Junqueiro in 1892. The analysis of news, reviews and articles on this work makes possible to understand a little better how has occurred the assimilation of Decadence-Symbolism in Brazil.

SEDUCTION SUCH AS THE SINGING OF THE MERMAID: LITERARY AND STYLISTIC PROCEDURES IN THE WORK POP-UP THE LITTLE MERMAID (2013), BY HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN AND ROBERT SABUDA
(Fundacao Univ Tocantins, 2020-09-01) Martins, Lucas Silverio; Barbosa Carrijo, Silvana Augusta; Universidade Federal de Goiás (UFG); Univ Acad Letras & Linguist; UFG Catalao; Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp); Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ); IILER Inst Interdisciplinar Leitura PUC RIO; Univ Fed Rio Grande do Norte; Assoc Nacl Posgrad Letras & Linguist ANPOLL
The work now appreciated presents the analysis of the pop-up work The Little Mermaid (1837), by Hans Christian Andersen, adapted by Robert Sabuda (2013). The objective, through descriptive and qualitative analyzes of the narrative, is to ask whether text, image, and pop-up elements are used to highlight the aesthetic-literary enjoyment of the work or give voice to practical, didactic-moralizing production. The study is justified by observing the pertinence of the literature that is offered to children and adolescents, directly influencing the reading training of these individuals, presented in an editorial format that unexplored in academic studies and that fosters new reading protocols. Through theoretical contributions selected from the epistemological fields of literature, illustration, and theories on pop-up techniques mainly by Candido (2004), Azevedo (2001) and Smithsonian Institute (2011), respectively, we consider that the work promotes the relationship between codes verbal, imagery and even pop-up resources, showing a stylistic construction of the plot.

RESEARCHES ON THE TEACHING OF LITERATURE IN BRAZIL
(Univ Estado Mato Grosso, 2020-12-01) Antunes, Benedito [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp)
This paper presents the preliminary results of a study on research groups focusing the teaching of literature and literary education in Brazil. One tries first, as an initial phase of a broader research, to quantify such groups and to determine their distribution around the country, and then to describe their main characteristics, based on profiles and information found in the Directory of Research Groups of the National Research Council (CNPq). It is a preparatory phase meant for the analysis of their scientific production, which will allow us to trace the theoretical and methodological trends underlying the researches carried out on the teaching of literature. The main conclusion of that phase of the research shows the existence of a large number of research groups which consider the most varied features of the teaching of literature in all regions of Brazil.

HERE AND OVERSEAS: LETTERS FROM RIO DE JANEIRO BY JAIME VITOR
(Univ Sao Paulo, Fac Filosofia Letras & Ciencias Humanas, 2020-12-01) Azevedo, Silvia Maria [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp)
The letters published in the Portuguese-Brazilian press throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries were widely used by journalists-correspondents on both sides of the Atlantic. Jaime Vitor, one of the directors of Brazil-Portugal (1899-1914), used this discursive modality in the Letters from Rio de Janeiro, an open correspondence sent to the readers of the monarchist magazine, at a time when the Republic was established in Portugal. The purpose of the article is to offer a reflection on this textual genre focused on communication in a public space, considering the goals of Jaime Vitor's trip to the Federal Capital, in 1912, to strengthen the ties between Brazil and Portugal, exposed in the Letters from Rio de Janeiro.

Politics and Literary Form in the Last Quarter of the Twentieth Century
(2021-04-01) Antunes, Benedito [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp)
This paper analyses Um copo de co´lera (1978), by Raduan Nassar, and Estorvo (1991), by Chico Buarque, aiming to observe the possible relationship between Romanesque form and political conflicts of the last quarter of the 20th century in Brazil. The paper hypothesizes that the elements recalled in the books literarily reach a deadlock which refers to an external context, gaining, in that movement, an esthetical perception of the period. Therefore, it is a dialectic reading attempt, in the same way proposed by Antonio Candido and Robert Schwartz, in which one tries to approximate the social form to the literary one, aiming at establishing perspectives of understanding, as much for one as for the other. As a result, the analysis suggests a process of disorientation in the quest for social transformation.

THE TEACHING OF LITERATURE ACCORDING TO ANTONIO CANDIDO
(Univ Sao Paulo, Fac Filosofia Letras & Ciencias Humanas, 2019-07-01) Antunes, Benedito [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp); CNPq
Professor Antonio Candido (1918-2017) was, as a few people in Brazil were, a confirmed humanist, who applied his principles to everything he had done as a professor, thinker and political activist. Strictly speaking, all such facets of his were marked by his role as a professor, concerned about fostering education for life within society. Based on the study of texts broaching Brazilian literary theory and literature, this paper was carried out to outline the conception of literature teaching in Antonio Candido's work, in order to contribute to the reflection on literary reading in classroom at a level which goes beyond merely didactic considerations and deals with literature as a relevant factor for human background development nowadays.

The Revista Feminina and the fashion in times of war (1914-1918)
(Assoc Brasileira Estudos & Pesquisas Moda, 2020-05-01) Azevedo, Silvia Maria [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp)
A publication of great success and impressive selling, the magazine Revista Feminina (1915-1936) - founded by Virgilina de Souza Salles, a prominent figure of the Sao Paulo elite - had the objective of guiding its readers on domestic issues and making them aware of popular causes in a moment of great expansion of the feminist movement (the right to vote and to work). Among the sections in the magazine approaching various topics, it is worth mentioning the one signed by Marinette, which was named Fashion, accompanied by illustrations (such as drawings and photographs) and focused on information about fashion from Paris, available in major department stores in Sao Paulo, such as La Saison and Mappin. World War I had a significant impact on the field of fashion, not only in the disappearance of fluid lines and fair skirts of the Edwardian era but also in the social role of women, who took the places of men in the ammunition factories, as well as offices and shops. Reflections on the changes in fashion as a result of the war were evident in the Fashion section of the magazine Revista Feminina, where Marinette, in addition to commenting on them, informed the readers about the reasons for such changes. The purpose of this article is to analyze the said section of Revista Feminina and propose a social and cultural reflection on the position of the magazine through the texts written by Marinette about the transformations in the fashion industry during the years of the First War, as well as its resonances in the behavior of women.

Machado de assis and reverse criticism
(2015-01-01) Azevedo, Sílvia Maria [UNESP]; Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp)
During the time he collaborated with the cartoon magazine Semana Ilustrada [Illustrated Week] (1860-1876), Machado de Assis, under the pen name of Dr. Semana, was the author of a number of chronicles in which a different kind of criticism, called reverse criticism by Raimundo Magalhães Júnior, emerged. This criticism consisted in flattering texts that were terrible from the literary viewpoint. Based on the theoretical formulations of Beth Brait and Linda Hutcheon regarding irony, the article aims to analyze some examples of this kind of criticism that arises in Semana Ilustrada, in which it is possible to identify the first signs of Machado's unreliable narrator.
