As Ressurreição was published in 1872, Machado de Assis started his career as a romantic novelist. In this book, the author created the third romantic way by disobeying the rules for writing a novel of manners and being devoid of another paradigm of novels. Therefore, the third romantic way became a new direction for the national Romanticism and it was present in his experience of being a playwright and a theatre critic. In this book, the author presents some guiding lines in the Prologue. They enable us to identify a dramatic presence represented by an epigraph of the English playwright William Shakespeare and Machado de Assis’ attempt to ‘outline a situation and contrast two characters’. The aim of this Master’s dissertation is to analyse Machado de Assis’ first novel according to the thematic and structural aspects of theatre.
