Resumo
Partindo da hipótese de que é possível flagrar nos textos de Monteiro Lobato (1882-1948) a manifestação de um particular pensamento estético, a presente pesquisa tem o objetivo de rastrear as declarações sobre arte, literatura, leitura e literatura infanto-juvenil assinaladas em sua produção ao longo de mais de quarenta anos de intensa militância intelectual (1903- 1948). Nesse sentido, pretende-se efetuar o levantamento, a seleção e a análise de trinta e quatro publicações literárias – abarcando o que convencionalmente se designou como “literatura geral” e “literatura infantil” – bem como seis coletâneas de ensaios jornalísticos e três volumes de cartas editadas pela Brasiliense. De modo geral, parte-se do conjunto de reflexões articuladas na mocidade – reunidas posteriormente no título Literatura do Minarete (1948) – passando pelas publicações incisivas de 1915 a 1919, e estendendo-se até os textos mais moderados contemplados nas décadas de 30 e 40. Assim, os dados desse estudo serão obtidos, compilados e organizados sistematicamente com base nas orientações da crítica especializada e nas biografias que se centram no itinerário do criador de Emília. Considerando esse quadro, a análise do material coletado permite identificar algumas diretrizes que regem suas convicções teóricas, como: a) a retórica iluminista em sintonia com o discurso republicano finissecular, centrada no anseio de “esclarecer” as diversas camadas sociais; b) o nacionalismo regenerador; c) a filiação aos pressupostos naturalistas; d) a valorização de uma perspectiva dialógica de leitura; e) a concepção de livro como mercadoria; f) a crença na educação como meio de redenção do país; g) o pacto com os princípios do movimento escolanovista; h) a ênfase à adaptação de clássicos universais e, paralelamente, o mote de democratização da cultura. Por outro lado, os registros deixados por Lobato, evidenciando múltiplas contradições, agregam a adesão a uma diversidade de correntes filosóficas, insistem na subversão aos padrões estrangeiros e acentuam um fértil diálogo com inúmeros sistemas culturais, exaltando modelos que transitam do erudito ao popular, do central ao periférico, do canônico ao não canônico.
Considering the hypothesis that it is possible to perceive the expression of a particular aesthetic thought in Monteiro Lobato’s (1882-1948) texts, this research aims at tracing distinguished statements on art, literature, reading and child literature in his production during over forty years of intense intellectual militancy (1903 - 1948). Accordingly, the survey, selection and analysis of thirty-four literary publications - covering what is conventionally designated as “general literature" and "child literature” - as well as six journalistic essays selections and three volumes of letters published by Brasiliense is intended to be conducted. The starting point is a bunch of reflexive thoughts from his youth – collected later under the title Literatura do Minarete (“Minaret Literature”, 1948) – passing by the incisive publications of 1915 to 1919 and unrolling to more moderated texts from the 30’s and 40’s. Thus, this study data will be systematically obtained, digested and organized with foundation in specialized criticism orientations and biographies centered in the Emilia’s creator itinerary. The collected data analysis allows the identification of some directions which rule his theoretical beliefs, such as: a) the illuminist rhetoric in tune with the finisecular republican speech, centered in the will to ‘enlighten’ the various social groups; b) the renewing nationalism; c) the following of the naturalistic assumptions; d) the appreciation of a dialogical reading perspective; e) the conception of book as a commodity; f) the belief in education as a means to the country salvation; g) the agreement with the principles of the Brazilian New School movement; h) the emphasis to the adaptation of the Literature classics and, at the same time, the motto of culture democratization. On the other hand, the registers left by Lobato, showing various contradictions, aggregate the membership to a diversity of philosophical threads, insist in the subversion of the foreign patterns and stress a productive dialogue with various cultural systems, elevating models that range from the scholarly to the popular, from the central to the peripheral, from the canonical to the non-canonical.
