Resumo
Desde meados do século XX vivenciamos um expressivo avanço nas tecnologias de informação e de comunicação. A informação se relaciona para além dos aparatos tecnológicos que armazenam e possibilitam a sua manipulação. Fred Dretske (1981) considera que ela é filosoficamente útil para estudos semânticos, cognitivos e epistemológicos. A informação, para esse pensador, é uma commodity objetiva, independente de processos interpretativos. Depois de codificada e processada cognitivamente, a informação adquire caráter semântico e a capacidade de sustentar a crença, gerando conhecimento. Dretske busca uma caracterização externalista de conhecimento perceptivo, definindo-o como crença causalmente sustentada por informação. Objetivamos, na presente dissertação, retratar determinados alcances e limites da abordagem informacional de conhecimento em Dretske. Para atingirmos esse fim, realizamos a divisão que se segue. No primeiro capítulo, tratamos do que envolve a concepção dretskiana de informação. Para tanto, investigamos as seguintes questões: Quais são as características da informação na abordagem de Dretske? Qual a relação da informação com o significado, a intencionalidade e o comportamento? O segundo capítulo fala da caracterização de conhecimento do autor. Assim, nos questionamos: A informação pode nos auxiliar no problema da justificação do conhecimento? Como ela pode se relacionar com o conhecimento perceptivo? De que maneira Dretske lida com as hipóteses céticas referentes à sua perspectiva de conhecimento? Por fim, no terceiro e último capítulo, apresentamos algumas das críticas aos pressupostos da noção de informação e conhecimento de Dretske.
Since the middle of the 20th century, we have experienced a significant advance in information and communication technologies. Information is related to more than just the technological devices that preserve it and make it possible to manipulate it. Fred Dretske (1981) considers it to be philosophically useful for semantic, cognitive and epistemological studies. For this thinker, information is an objective commodity, independent of interpretative processes. After being encoded and cognitively processed, information takes on a semantic character and the capacity to sustain belief, generating knowledge. Dretske tries to find an externalist definition of perceptual knowledge, defining it as a belief causally sustained by information. The objective of this dissertation is to illustrate the scope and limits of Dretske's informational approach to knowledge. In this sense, we have divided the dissertation as follows. In the first chapter, we discuss what is involved in Dretske's conception of information. To this end, we investigate the questions below: What are the characteristics of information in Dretske's approach? What is the relationship between information and meaning, intentionality and behavior? The second chapter focuses on the author's characterization of knowledge. So we are wondering: Can information help us with the problem of justifying knowledge? How can it relate to perceptual knowledge? How can Dretske confront the skeptical hypotheses concerning his perspective on knowledge? Finally, in the third and last chapter, we present some of the criticisms of the postulates of Dretske's notion of information and knowledge.
