Resumo
A presente Tese de Doutorado propõe analisar a construção do chamado locus horribilis, ou espaço do medo, propondo a compreensão do modo pelo qual ele atua na geração do sentimento de horror nos contos da escritora canadense contemporânea Alice Munro, vencedora do Prêmio Nobel de Literatura em 2013. Seus contos, elaborados de forma renovada, são caracterizados pelos finais em aberto, contêm descrições realistas do sudoeste de Ontário e retratam cenas familiares que facilitam a introdução do estranho, do misterioso e do desconhecido. Os contos selecionados são “Vandals” em Open Secrets (1994), “The Love of a Good Woman” que pertence à obra de mesmo nome (1998), e “Child´s Play” presente em Too Much Happiness (2009). Será considerado aqui o locus horribilis como a junção da espacialidade, ambientação e atmosfera, criando um espaço de horror que gera desconforto às personagens e também ao leitor. Para o desenvolvimento deste estudo, apoiamo-nos nas teorias do espaço, do gótico, do medo, do horror e terror com o objetivo de realizar uma análise que aponte caminhos para a compreensão e apreensão de alguns dos recursos utilizados pela contista na estruturação do locus horribilis em suas narrativas.
The present thesis proposes to analyse the construction of the so-called locus horribilis or space of fear, searching for the way to comprehend how it performs in creating the feeling of horror in the short stories of contemporary Canadian writer Alice Munro, winner of the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature. Her short stories, elaborated in a renewed way, are characterized by open ends, have realistic descriptions of southwest Ontario, depict familiar scenes that facilitate the introduction of the strange, the mysterious and the unknown. The selected short stories are “Vandals” from the book Open Secrets (1994), “The Love of Good Woman” that belongs to the book with the same title (1998), and “Child´s Play” from Too Much Happiness (2009). The locus horribilis is considered here as the connection of spatiality, ambiance, and atmosphere, creating a space of horror that causes discomfort in the characters as well as the reader. To the development of this study, we relied on the theories of the gothic, of fear, horror, and terror with the objective of carrying out an analysis that shows ways to comprehend and apprehend some resources used by the short story writer in order to structure space in her narratives.
