Abstract

Abstract (english)

Biomass is one of the main sources of renewable energy in Brazil and is a good source of energy that replaces fossil fuels. Aiming at the energy use of residues from various biomasses, high energy density is desirable, that is, a greater amount of energy per unit volume. To achieve this improvement in energy density for wastes that have disadvantageous physical and chemical characteristics, such as high moisture content and difficult storage, an energy densification process such as briquetting or pelletizing is used, and to improve the calorific value can be used the roasting process. The torrefaction process is a thermal biomass conversion method that operates in the low temperature range (200 ͒C and 300 ͒C) and is carried out under atmospheric conditions in the absence of oxygen. Due to the large amount of agroforestry and agroindustrial residues existing in Brazil, there is a need for solutions that add value to these materials. In this work, briquettes of Pinus spp. and cassava strains are roasted, checking and analyzing the physical and chemical properties of materials and briquettes. It was concluded that the torrefaction process elevates the briquette to a more qualified solid fuel, with higher energy density, with a higher fixed carbon content, with an increase in calorific value in relation to the in natura briquette. With the results, all treated biomass has potential for energy use, using the briquetting and torrefaction process to add even more value to the fuel.
