Abstract

Abstract (english)

Seizures in dogs are a condition present in the context of veterinary clinical routines. In an emergency situation, the underlying cause of this condition is not immediately established, but diagnosis becomes feasible through the classification of the seizure based on clinical signs and patient history. With this perspective, the treatment of seizure episodes becomes more targeted. The seizure, as is commonly known, is a disruption in brain activity that leads to changes in movement and consciousness. Its pathophysiology is characterized by an imbalance among neurotransmitters, resulting in an overexcitation of neuronal membranes that extends to regions beyond the brain. There are various terminologies employed to categorize seizures, with many of these terms derived from human medicine. However, many of these terms were not consistently applied and/or did not pertain to non-human patients, leading to irregularities in descriptions among professionals and hindering case comprehension. Currently, there are consensus efforts aimed at standardizing these definitions. Epilepsy is a common ailment among canine patients and is associated with seizure episodes, yet not every seizure has this etiology. In this study, potential diagnoses for seizure episodes were enumerated, encompassing non-epileptic causes as well.
