Abstract
The scientific career of Vicente Lopes Jr at UNESP—Ilha Solteira—spanned three decades in which he worked on new applications of smart structures in structural health monitoring and active vibration control. Prof. Lopes Jr. was one of the pioneers in Brazil for using smart materials and intelligent structures, having supervised several students during his career. This article is a tribute, due to his retirement, reviewing his scientific contribution and highlighting the importance to the Brazilian smart structures community.
