Resumo
This article aims to explore convergences and conflicts between elements belonging to the ancient (Greco-Roman and Christian) and modern cultures in Baudelaire's poetry, as well as demonstrating how this dialogue works as a means to strengthen the characteristics of modernity itself. The study of the relationship between history and time and mapping the quarrel between ancient and modern precedes the analysis of the interpenetration between the ancient and modern in the poems The Swan, The Seven Old Men and The Little Old Women. The method of parallel passages, founded on repetition of concepts and consistency, emerges as an important tool to achieve the probable motivation to fuse the ancient and the modern.
